Yesterday I got talking with a friend about how Cryptic will eventually raise the level cap and introduce Tier 6 ships which my friend was expecting.
I argued that can't happen, since our current top of the line ships, which most of us invested serious time or even money in, can not be invalidated by a new line of ships that are more powerful than anything before.
But since we will eventally get a level cap raise (maybe even with the new content that Season 7 brings) this is what I think should happen:
We get a support ship that functions similar to a Boff in space and basically blends the Boff mechanic from ground and fighter commands.
Each support ship we can choose from comes with a class typical base power line up that it uses on it's own.
Now to make it more interesting than your standard pet ship (seperated saucer, aquarius escort) you assign one of your boffs as Captain of that ship. That Boff determines which extra powers the ship has (similar to your captain powers) from the normal boff power line up.
These Boff powers would be controllable by yourself via issueing an order to the support ship if you want to, just like on ground (with just a better UI).
Further you can preset the support ship's action behavior to Normal Attack Mode (the AI acts on its own), Escort Defense Mode (the ships defends a designated target), Passive Support Mode (doesn't engage, just uses heal and buffs on designated targets).
You can have multiple support ships with different Boff captains, but have only one actively with you.
And yes, this probably opens up a whole new set of upgrades Cryptic can sell us in the store, too: Special support ships outside of the standard classes (with non standard base powers), Support ship weapon loadout, support ship gear,...
Well, you can probably think up a lot of details, but tome this seems the only way to give us sort of a Tier 6 without devalueing our hard earned T5s.
I can see adding maybe another 5/10 levels keeping the same endgame ships we have.. but sooner or later they are gonna need to put out a new tier of ship... if you have ever played an MMO before you should realize that the endgame gear, no matter the effort to acquire, will one day be outdated in a heartbeat because of new content
in fact it is over due for this game... I saw one dev comment that something like 90 percent of players already have a toon at max (excuse they used as to why they aren't doing KDF levels 1-25)... which means soon everyone will have an "endgame" ship and there will be literally nothing for anyone to work toward ... remember the MMO business = carrot on stick gameplay...
I agree.
But where does it say that our main ship must be completely replaced?
Just unlock a companion ship to have the cake and eat it, too.
T5 Ship = T5 Ship
T5 Ship + Support Ship = T6
You keep your T5 and become more powerful anyway, because now in essence you have 2 ships at your disposal.
because they can charge more zen for complete new ships than they can for support ships? lol
honestly I don't need another pet ship following me around... the pet AI in this game is terrible already and if it's just for a buff than it's just screen clutter... maybe they could just add a way to "upgrade/refit" our current endgame ships to add more hull, console slots ect. to make them into next tier ships...
but at the end of the day whatever they do they will end up charging as much for it as if they just released brand new 1 tier higher ships... because that's how business works... because right now we have fleet ships but once everyone has one Z-store sales will drop like stones... lol
um. from what i heard, your basically describing the fleet admiral [rank, not actual in chrge of a player created fleet kind] system that was discussed a while back when the idea of adding the rank in at some point popped up.
Al Rivera said in an interview awhile back that it's more likely future rank ups will come without a level increase and that 50 will remain the max level to keep the STFs and such as endgame content.
If they raise the level cap, the existing gear and STFs would become obsolete too fast.
It's more likely that rank-ups from here on out will be some kind of unlock with a title and an ability.
Nobody ever said that they have to put in more ships to expand on gameplay.
Everquest 2 does this all the time. They only increase levels every other expansion, and they only release 1 expansion per year. In the meantime, they do expand on Alternate Experience points to let characters still grow without increasing levels.
This also means that while the gear and weapons found on monsters in the next non-level increasing expansion is only slightly better, anyone who doesn't raid can still keep up with the best of them by using their weapons found in the previous expansion.
They don't have to increase the level of the ships, just the level of the ship equipment so the ships themselves can match up in power with T6 Enemy inflation.

Post 50 would be good to have a speciality skill that narrows a toon down to one particular area (pistols, or escorts; in-space repairs; species specialism etc) and an associated skills so you would have Subclasses of tactical, engineering and science.
This gives loads of content options without much work/input. Endgame equipment remains endgame, and it gives players more reasons to keep playing and tailoring more than one toon.
Fleet I recall correctly, the idea was to be a "Fleet Admiral" and control more than 1 ship at a time.
Unlike the current space pets that are non combat (excluding Sci fleet skill), everyone would gain combat pets to control like your away team on the ground.
You would have to equip the ships and pick who was in charge of the ship (skill a BO to Cptn rank).
That was the idea a while back, if we ever see it is another matter, as that was talked about before F2P

Yeah, I think an increased in the level cap & revamping all the T5 ships into T6 is too much work and would kill all the level 50 end game stuff we have now. The Cryptic team is too small to take on something that big.
They said already the last time they bumped it there wasn't enough to do. So how can they be expected to add another 5-10 levels of new stuff? It won't happen.
Chances are you'll see new side level up systems like the Doff system but for some type of skill or personalization set. And expect some folks to call it a grind fest just like the current Fleet system is too.

Didn't Dan just mention a level cap increase in an Ask Cryptic? I could have swore I remember seeing a hint about a level cap increase either in an Ask Cryptic or in an interview Dan gave sometime over the last 3 months.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

I like this idea...more abilities for the rank unlock, but no level increase, hopefully more gear and ship hull strength would scale with the rank unlock. The Fleet Admiral unlock could allow us to have four other ships from our inventory fly as our space escort boffs if we so choose. The Admiral unlock could allow us to promote boffs to captain and select our ships slots as universal commander and a captain slot.
I have Star Trek Legacy on my xBox 360 and it allowed the player in deathmatches to control up to four ships, with the ability to give general commands to the group and to control any one of them directly--the player could even hop between ships during the battle.

He mentioned a rank increase.
All that means is that Admiral will still be level 50. Fleet Admiral will be level 50. Federation President (or whatever) will be level 50.
They may add abilities and mechanics at the new ranks but ranks will be untied from levels.
Well I wouldn't mind seeing T6 ships as long as there is a free T5 token for all, ie we get the current ships for free. And getting new gear would be interesting too.
Anyway, we'll have to see that sooner or later, Cryptic can't make new ships forever, even the interesting and new BO layouts possibilities will deplete, and a cap raise will be necessary to sell the T6 ships with let's say, captain BO abilities.
If you try to train your BO beyond commander, you can see that the option already exists, even if you can't do it. So, it's planned, don't worry.
From what I read on here and what the Devs have said in pod casts, the level cap will not be going up ever. Instead they are planing to introduce a "Talent tree" with season 7 which will enable you to 'rank up' but not 'level up', much like guild wars.
so i wouldn't expect tier 6 ships or anything like that any time in the foreseeable future. What we will get is an extra rank/s with extra captains abilities.
That's what I think is on the table, and yes I am fairly sure I heard Al on a pod cast say we will get 'away teams' in space as part of that progression.

I just hope that we get a functioning First Officer system that allows us to use Captain abilities off our XO choices to a limited degree as discussed in threads past.
I really like the idea of being about to make my boffs captains of their own ships that would support you in combat, i was kinda annoyed that they ended the game at vice admral when there are two ranks still higher, admiral (4 bars) and fleet admiral (5 bars), Id say at admiral you get to make one boff a captain with a support ship, and at fleet you then get to make a second. so you can have 3 ships fighting at once at fleet admiral!
