Efficient Boffs ?

Quick question about efficient bridge officers .. sorry if its been asked before, I couldnt find it.

Does the efficient trait work if the bridge officer is just part of your bridge crew giving you 6 or more (if you buy extra Boff slots) or do they have to be at a station limiting you to 5 total ?

Thanks for any help on this.

    They have to be assigned to a Bridge Station for be effective.
