How much would you pay for Boff voice packs?

unangbangkayunangbangkay Member Posts: 10 Arc User
Everyone knows Majel Roddenberry's iconic "Star Trek Computer Voice" narrating your actions through battle, and some even know the option to expand the ship's voice prompts (though it can get annoying to hear her "recommend torpedo launch now" when you're floating an all-cannon boat), but what about more voices across the board?

I'm not just talking about the recent influx of voice acting into things like the Featured Episodes, but, as in the post title, for your bridge officers. Folks who've been here since day one may remember a little old option in the Tailor that let you pick a voice for your bridge officer. Clearly in the 800+ days since launch this option has since disappeared, but now I'm wondering how much more voices would be worth to you folks?

Keep in mind everyone in Star Trek said everything out loud. It was hard to read LCARS screens for information, and budget restrictions kept things weighted in favor of telling rather than showing, so it's very much "true" to Star Trek to hear your bridge officers constantly babbling about whatnot going on.

So...how badly do you want it? I'd personally cough up some Zen for a simple "generic" voice pack. It doesn't have to be super-detailed (those will get annoying over time), but it would do wonders for immersion to hear my Tac officer say "Firing At Will!" or "Launching High Yield Torpedo" or my science officer blurting out "Activating Tachyon Beam" every so often.

It shouldn't be done every single time, of course. In high level play abilities are cycling so often the voice clips would interrupt one another.

Or, in a pinch, a voice pack for Captain Abilities if Boff abilities are too much work. Most captain powers are on a long enough cooldown that you'd only hear the clip once every few minutes, and then you'd know something special is happening (like a Miracle...Worker).

Would you speak up (or cough up) in favor of your crew speaking up?

I have always supported this idea, kind of similar to Bridge Commander when the bridge officers give you random confirmations, such as:

    - scanning
    - a vessel is decloaking
    - they are hailing us
    - Hailing frequencies open

I would definitely pay for this option, however I would like to see it expanded further:

    - The option to interact with your bridge officers and crew and them giving a standard response such as "Yes sir?" "Captain?" and so on. It wouldnt have to be an extensive dialogue, just a simple confirmation for immersion purposes.

    - The DOFF's situated around your ship should also give you some sort of confirmation when spoken to and when assignments are started.

I think perhaps you should turn this into a poll instead to get the devs attention.

Voices would have to be efficient
    Clearly spoken
    non accented
and NOT sexy in any way shape or form
    (no "egaging tractor now Sweetie")

Considering it's something they already have and took out I wouldn't pay a single cent towards it. It's something they should simply fix and put back in, in fact it's something they should have fixed and put back in years ago.

But of course - though on the off chance of them selling more than one pack an optional "personality pack" featuring attitudes or accents could work.

Honestly, even if the voice acting were completely flat (like it is in most of the Feature Episodes :D ) it would be fine, so long as I could vaguely believe they came from my bridge crew and not just the computer.

That said, the KDF would probably need a more aggressive-sounding voice pack.

I'd actually say to go the synthesized voice routes rather than hired actors. After all, computers work for the price of electricity. Actors want to be able to afford the rent.

I often imagine my Tactical Officer on the blue streak (andorian) talks a bit like A very Angry traffic cop

Why do these "How much would you pay for this" threads keep popping up?

An end game ship costs 25USD. 30USD if you get a fleet upgrade. A per toon space suit cost 7, I have 12 toons. Guess what? Not gonna happen.

Me spending money to get BOFF voice packages? No, No, No, No, No, No, No, no, no, nononononononononono, no, nonononononono.

For a free game this game is far too expensive already.

I'd also like a pony and a handful of gold every day from Santa and his elves. But that's not the way it works.

I want everything to be great and free and non-fattening but still taste good, but I haven't died and gone to heaven yet. So I have to be a little bit realistic. If they couldn't be bothered to add in voices, maybe it would be an extra incentive if we said we'd pay for them.

Say no all you like, but saying yes when you actually see something you want enough is more likely to get you what you want.

Yea that's a negative here as well. I'd prefer situations where I can actually USE my BOFFs besides as a skill activation button on my ship.

With the latest push for more ground content (which I used to DESPISE pre-S6 I would like to add.. but now I find it rather enjoyable) it would be nice to have more (NON-UGC) end-game missions where BOFFs can be used.

Not a damn penny. And I'm with piwright on this, these "What would you pay for..." threads are an eyesore. Stuff will make its way into the C-store on its own. No need to go reinforcing bad behavior and spelling out for them exactly how far up the aft cargo hold you're willing to take it. Let them guess. They guess low, good for you. If they guess high, they'll learn. Don't help them exploit you.

And for those of you riling up ready to draw in the "Even World of ******** <---Note the insecurity) has a cash store." argument into this, I don't know if you played that game. I used to. There were maybe a dozen pets and mounts in that store at the time, versus about three hundred obtainable by ingame means only. And half the items in that store when I visited it had little footnotes on them earmarking half of the proceeds for charity. There is no more disingenuous comparison you could make. I know cashstores are here to stay. I accept that. I have no problem with it. However I simply haven't seen a cashstore that offers less for more than Cryptic's anywhere, except maybe EVE's, but theirs is entirely low-pressure cosmetic and at least CCP was big enough to admit it when they were wrong.

So as for the zero pennies, that stands, separate from my point of view on these kinds of baiting threads. I'm getting the Regent. I have virtually every Starfleet ship on that store. I do believe they always were overpriced, at least for people without a lot of alts benefitting of that one purchase, but I do get the things I like. Boff voiceovers aren't something I want to see in the C-store. They were something I would've liked to have two years ago. It wasn't there. Now I'm used to my bridge minions shutting their traps and pushing buttons. I've no desire to have them muttering through SSR or the podcasts I listen to while playing.

    $0.

It's already been done and in the game files. Now it's just a matter of reactivating them and making sure they work properly since the game has undergone significant updates since launch.

I would not purchase a voice pack for any characters I make. That is a big reason why I don't play SWTOR, I dont like a character I made to have a voice that is not something I made, the characters I make, I make with a certain voice in mind, not having that voice would drive me insane, so I would rather no voice at all. I like voice overs for people who give missions, but no, not on my characters.

That being said, if they can make money off of it, power to them.

I don't like the voiceovers that remain in the game as it is. I don't need the game to talk to me. I can read the pop ups just fine.

The computer warnings in space don't bother me as much, but they're still annoying. I have all the information I need on my HUD; I don't need the game to repeat to me aloud.

Not a dime. It is something I do not think I want, nor do I think it is something this game needs. Besides, how tiresome would it be if you kept hearing the sami es over and over. Main mission givers I would be fine with.

If I was able to pay for a sexy female voice narrating everything I do, like the one in EVE Online, then sure.

Thats a good point, some of the voice overs don't sound right, like the one Reman's voice does not sound at all like it should which sickens me when I hear it.

I would not pay any additional money for something that I've already purchased.

I would not pay any additional money for something that is already present in the files I have downloaded and installed on my computer.

I would not pay any additional money for something that is not currently used by the game.

The voiceovers are already in the game data, Cryptic has files like "Voice_Bo_Accent_Female_Brit", "Voice_Bo_Accent_Male_Scot", "Voice_Bo_Klingon_Female", "Voice_Bo_Ferengi_Male", and so on...
