ok so id like to collect some opinions on which torpedos you think are best and why, ive done some experimentation and found transphasic ( in particular the fast firing one) to do more dmg then a higher dmg dps weapon like photons. what about quantums? they have listed lower dps but is that decieving? also what about tricobalts? i kinda like the tricobalt mine layer but from my experience the cooldown is just too long and the wep slow is better occupied by a cannon or photon. which ones are best for pve /pvp and why? tks

Transphasic slow firing ones provide the most DPS and overall best killing power and are what I use.
Rapid Fire Transphasic they work ok with x2 Breen Cluster, x2 Rapid but I prefer x3 slow firing torpedoes with x1 Breen. Basically 2 launchers = rapid better, 3 launchers = slow Transphasic better.
Plasma is ok but a lot lower DPS then it looks as targets can clear Plasma DoT I wouldn?t use them.
Quantums are nice for taking down shields but by the time you have done that Transphasic would have killed the target. Overall in PvP and PvE I find Quantums and Photons the lowest end of DPS compared to Transphasic and Plasma.
If you just want to spam torpedos use transphasic, as they have the highest shield penetration (good for science ships with low damage who can't kill shields by themselves) or photons because of the high firing frequency.
if you are good with taking down shields either through high energy damage or shield stripping debuffs you should use slow firing ones with high Damage per hit.
Quantum torpedos with a High Yield 2/3 or Torpedo Spread 2/3 can do really nasty things to a ships hull if they hit directly.
The trick is to make them connect to the hull when it is completely unprotected and requires some timing and practice.
Even a weak 1% shield facing reduces torpedo damage to almost nothing.
Transphasics to me seem a better choice if you CAN'T break a shield.
Are there torpedos that add to breaking the shields themelves?
There are none, and torpedoes may as well be peas if thrown at an enemy with active shields. That's why some torpedo-using builds favor weapons to kill shields quickly and leave the bare hull to be exploited by hull-breaking torpedoes like the Quantum and Photon. Plasma torpedoes also add a stacking burn effect that causes damage through shields.
In STFs it's preferable to attack the hull directly, as most AI units have weak shields and strong hulls, but transphasics are a slightly more valid option in PVP, where players keep their shields up for much longer.
I don't spam them but manual-fire them, the idea is that my cannon salvoes or beam overload at short range and Attack Pattern A/B will punch through the enemy shield facing and that's when you fire your quantum Hi Yield II down their throat to do close to 10k damage per hit x3 (actual damage IIRC is much more than 10k but I ain't boasting, just conveying the idea).
Precision-fired quantum salvoes take down any PvE and STF target very fast with brute force especially combined with the DPS from your primary energy weapons.
Plasma torpedoes are my second favourite as it's the only torpedo type I find worthwhile using the Hi Yield I skill, in case the ship build in question has a spare Ensign Tactical slot.
For fast turning ships like Birds of Prey I only have one torpedo tube in the rear and the HY Plasma torpedo is perfect for a 'tail stinger' attack as I pull out of an attack run (Endgame PvP/PvE is not just about pointing DHCs at the enemy. Maneuver plays a big role in large engagements where sitting still = possibly dead ship the next moment)
I have not tried the Transphasics yet as I don't like the fact that if I do take out the enemy's shields I want my torpedoes to do insane damage to the hull, and Transphasics do not deal much hull damage on their own. (Nor am I a fan of the Breen set to boost TP damage)
