has anyone pointed out that the TR-116 in that episode of DS9 was modified with a transporter. It does not come on the weapon standered.

and you can give me a LMG-36 over a phaser mini gun anyday. i know that they may not be as practical in startrek. but they are simple, and will work when you need them (assuming you take care of it)

On that note i would like to say that IMO Fire-arms are more imersive (cant think of the word im looking for, but im trying to say "more skill is requiered to use them") than a phaser rifle. The phaser is practicaly going to work as long as the battery is charged. but with a gun its diffrent. you need more than ammo, you have to keep it clean, oiled, know it inside and out. Know how it works, what it does. No suprise they become your best freind in combat. a Good Gun is like a Good Dog, or a good truck. Take care of it, it loves you back.

plus it takes more skill to use than a point and shoot, oh look you took out a wall phaser. you have to worry about bullet travel time, bullet drop, wind velocity, recoil, on some guns even barrol warp. if the gun jam during combat, you need to know how to clear it quickly.

now that ive said that, i do think fire arms have a place in star trek. there a nice backup in dampaning feilds. wich seem to happen alot. if i was a star ship capatin, id have my 357 where ever i went. plus someone said earlier that a sheild cant stop both matter and energy at the same time. i dont know if thats true or not, but it makes sense. so if everyone is planing on a phaser, my LMG-36 would just **** everyones day-up.

as for balancing. if enough people want it, then the devs should put it in. balancing it out is part of the job, and fun. worst come to worst could do what dice did with the FAMAS in BF3, just make it kick like a muel and shoot paint balls

I just want an underbarrel photon grenade launcher for my sniper rifle. Is that too much to ask? Give it horrific single-target kinetic damage (50% shield penetration) and standard photon grenade AoE damage, with a hefty cooldown.

Perfect reasons for NOT having firearms :D

Again, see above. Plus, we don't know anything about the physical specifications of a phaser. It looks easy in the show, but so does shooting a gun on TV.

Please, no. That's STO biggest flaw, because they scram EVERYTHING in there that someone might want (and buy) it's a complete and utter mess. Every Battlestar Galactica fan wants his ships in there, every Star Wars fan wants his lightsabre and every gun enthusiast wants a firearm in there. Then, for crying out loud, the game has nothing to do with Star Trek anymore, just rename the damn thing. That's not meant to be offensive towards you but this game has really been blown a long time ago because of the pure fanwankery it became.
