Specialized Starbases

I started my Fleet and got a Starbase this weekend, and am about to finish the first Tactical and Science missions. As the timer started last night, I excitedly looked at the list of other science and tactical projects I had available, as I wanted to specialize in a scientific starbase. Unfortunately, it appears that there are only 2 sci, 2 eng, and 2 tac missions at Tier 0, and that the titles of these projects are kind of meaningless. You just do them over and over in order to get Sci, Eng, and Tac credits up to 10,000 points each. This is disappointing.

For some reason, I got it in my head that we could specialize in a certain way (sci, eng, or tac). My Fleet leader is a Sci officer, so I wanted to make my base kind of like the Daystrom Institute, focusing on all the science projects that would be available.

If anyone remembers The Sims Online, you built your house (starbase) and could focus on specific character traits (cooking, woodworking, chalkboards, etc.). You would invite others to your house to train at those things, and everyone socialized and learned together. I don't know why I assumed Starbases would be like this, but I definitely jumped to the wrong conclusion!

In my mind, I would have a sci-oriented base, where players could visit when they needed to craft science-based weapons, or prototypes (like that guy on K-7 who builds your Devidien gun), probably at a cheaper cost than at Memory Alpha, and maybe with extra bonuses. Maybe a player could bring his BOff to a sci-Base for training in Gravity Well 4+ (extra hold or timer or something) cheaper than at ESD. Maybe you could heal your crew faster and cheaper than elsewhere.

For a tac-Base, you could either specialize in building Fleet ships or concentrate in protecting nearby planets and races (that IS the title of one of the tac projects, after all!).

(When I got my "special project" of an interior designer yesterday, I excitedly entered my Base, thinking I was going to be able to decorate it the way I wanted. Unfortunately, the Base was already decorated FOR me (tastefully, I might add).)

Anyway, I'm enjoying my Base. I just imagined more aspects to it than there are or were intended. This is my own fault. But maybe in the future.....:)
