all I ever wanted was to be a captain but they keep premoting me!!
any way if I keep premoting my bofs and one makes captain,
where does that leave me? do I still run my ship or do I get a desk
job on a star base some where?
"Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship because while you're there, you can make a difference."
I hope Cryptic will one day see the error of its ways and allow the playerbase the option to customize their experience.
Whats needed in my opinion (at a minimum):
- a new mission tag implemented across all content {player-chosen-rank} that will substitute the current rank greeting in mission text.
- remove ranks from gear and replace with the appropriate level range (which we already have)
Just pretend that you are advancing in seniority as a captain and being given command of better ships as a result.
You still only command a single ship at a time, and your Bridge officers can't get past cmdr, so it makes more sense anyway since a real Admiral commands a fleet from a flagship, not just a single ship.
The problem with using titles and rank insignia as a work around is that you need to be really dedicated to deluding yourself for it to be at all convincing.
The UI likes to rub your nose in the fact that you're actually a Vice Admiral. Mission text too.
Indeed, it's jarring that sometimes NPC dialogue doesn't honor your selected title of Captain. Apparently, it was something to do with the titles awarded from accolades sometimes giving funny result (e.g. if you get the accolade for the Undine missions, instead of [rank] Zhang one gets called Moist Zhang - LOL)
I myself quite like the idea of decoupling levels and ranks, making the latter as career milestones with titles one can chose from and ACTUALLY influence NPC dialog.
Laws of thermodynamics as applied to life: 0 - You must play the game. 1 - You can't win. 2 - You can't break even. 3 - You can't quit.
I would like to see them add the option where you can promote one of your BOFFs to Captain and they then transfer over to an open character slot, possibly starting at level 30 since that is the level you obtain "Captain" title in the game. They would keep all their current gear though it would be scaled down to Mk VII or VIII and then they would be playable on their own.

I often wonder if in real life how often a captain would actually get a different ship to command??
