Before anyone starts saying this is just another "lockbox hate" thread, let me state that it isn't though personally I can't stand lockboxes but that is my opinion and my alone and now I digress.
Now to my suggestion: Having the option to "Pick the Lock on a Lockbox" whether we simply have the option by right clicking on a lockbox or we have to have a "lock picking tool" to do this; this tool if necessary could be purchased from a vendor or made available by crafting it.
My reasoning on this is: For those of us who can't stand and don't want to deal with lockboxes and have no intention of buying keys to open them, why not allow these or any other player the option to "pick the lock of a lockbox" and get something like what used to drop BEFORE lockboxes where introduced into the game; random ground gear or space gear, even an amount of Energy Credits or Dilithium. Let them be useful in some way for those of us who aren't and don't intend to buy keys. Picking the lock on a lockbox is a far better alternative than having players who hate/don't want them to keep raging over them.
And that is my 2 cents; take it for what it's worth to you.
I'd say this should be an option if lockboxes replaced an item on the loot tables, however, lockboxes have, as long as I've remembered / heard, been an extra drop that does not change the remaining drops...
I know in STFs I get an EDC, one or two other items, and a lockbox. During that transition day, I got the normal loots, but no lockboxes... And with my Tac playing elite level, 95% of my lockbox drops also come with a white/green item, once I think I got a purple at the same time I got a lockbox...
Are they annoying? Yeah. Will they hopefully sell nicely after a month or 6 in my bank/mail? Only time will tell...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

The whole point of lockboxes is to make money, opening them for free would not make money.
Therefore there will never be a free way to open them.
Before anybody say buy keys off the exchange at some point somebody actually purchased those keys with Zen.

He's not talking about getting lockbox items from them though, he's talking about getting regular loot items from them, so for those who'll never use them they stop being so damned annoying.
Personally, I don't mind the lock boxes. It's sorta fun wondering what I'll get when I open one. My biggest disappointment is that the reward chances are probably account bound. I've never one anything worth bragging about from a lock box. Yet, I always see the same people's names popping up on my screen for winning ships, sometimes more than once in a day. My biggest suggestion would be to change how winners are decided.
Its pretty sad when people in my fleet know that they're going to get a ship before they even open a box each time something new comes out... and surprise, they were right... again! Ofcourse, I wouldn't be complaining if I got one of those lucky accounts ;-)

It certainly doesn't feel that way. I'd swear that lockboxes are the entire drop table. THEY AT THE FREAKING VERY LEAST NEED TO MAKE THEM STACK TO 999!
President of the Amnian Illithid Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Please spread the word that the term "Mind Flayer" is a derogatory term to our kind.
Considering that pretty much everything in the Tholian Lockboxes are useful and by no means common items, there is no reason to put this in.
It's safe to say that the developers aren't going to go back to the old system where there were common and useless items in the boxes, or that the boxes themselves were split by quality.
Just continue to buy the keys and help keep the game running. Those hampsters keeping the servers running die every now and then, and they're not cheap to replace.

I for one like the idea.
Still they have to protect that 34% Net Profit.
Some (Many?) of us just sell them on the exchange. They get bought so someone has to be buying keys for the ones that we don't want and opening them.
Its a shame but they probably will never let you "pick the lock"
they CAN at least give them a small value, so when they are discarded you get SOMETHING. Say 250ec, Ill take 100ec per box for shooting them out the airlock with the extra colonists/prisoners.
I feel an idea coming on... maybe they could make a DOFF mission to "pick the lock". Critical success opens the box to get a little dilithium or whatever and any other result destroys the box with no reward.
I've opened a few and got decent items and ships, but frankly I don't have the cash to open them all. Such a mission would give value to lock boxes for those players that don't intend to open any. And this would raise the value of them when I sell my extra boxes on the exchange.:)

Either that or they've found a hack.
