Undoubtedly they store ship data and character data separately and use data relationships between the two. Having too many of these running concurrently, like when you are at the ships selector or switching to your active ship, it can affect server performance.
its like they never thought of ANYTHING through before making this game
Maybe a roundabout way to solve this problem (though not the OP's problem) is to make those ships reclaimable? You could either set a flag that lets the character reclaim a ship from the store, or you could solve it even more elegantly by letting us pack up a ship from our roster into an inventory box, preferably either unbound or account-bound.
I'm sorry, I still just don't see the problem. You are saying that you can't claim additional slot rewards because you hit the max for that character... ok... so start yet another character, again, problem solved.
I like Mac'n Cheese, the grocery store only allows me to buy 10 when it goes on sale. I have a coupon that says if I buy ten I get 5 free. But the store only allows me to buy 10, so I can't use my "5 free" coupon.
Oh darn, life sucks. Just because I want it, doesn't mean their system is broken. They put in a limit that very few players will ever hit, you are one of the few that hit that limit. No matter how high a limit they place, sooner or later someone is going to hit that limit. Does that mean that they need to recode and fix the "broken" game because one player (outside the norm) hit the limit?
yes, it means you can't get the absolute biggest bonus you could theoretically get... but if the goal is to collect every ship, you CAN. Just put fewer ships per character.
You can still collect them all, just not on one character.

Um if they issue a coupon like that, it means thier system IS broken.. or the management at least.
I will not be SOL because I beat the system before the system is in place. I can tell you that there are at least 1000 other people who have the same problem I do. they are just not vocal about it or don't know the forums exist. If a limit needs to be extended it needs to be extended. I am living proof of that.

Bad example, because not only does that mean their system is broken, that particular example would actually be breaking trading standards in many countries and would open the company up that made the coupons to legal action.
In regards to the issue at hand, Cryptic is only hurting thier sales by not increasing the hard cap on Ship slots, more so since it seems STO has now basically become a ship collecting game for the most part.

Yeah. See I know what his issue is.
He's stuck on the vet reward tier that awards another ship slot. Because it can't fire off. Because he has 40-some odd ship slots already and is at the cap.
So he's ineligible for more ship slots. And therefore ineligible for more vet rewards on his main.
If he were nicer about it and I were a dev, I'd refund his ship slots that went over the limit so he can get his vet rewards, give him a big stack of perks like a veteran BO, maybe offer to duplicate his main with ship slots intact so he can play all his ships, address the error he's facing, and create a little tribute to him in-game in the form of a mad ship collector.
As it stands, he hit a bug caused by having the game's limit on ship slots. And his approach is, "To heck with the limits! TRIBBLE you, Cryptic! More slots! More slots!"
Somebody should have fixed it for him by now.
Like I say, it's a weird, exceptional case but *I* would have just made arrangements to close the loophole (by setting a lower hardcap for ship slot purchases than the actual system cap) and duped his character for him with the same number of open ship slots as he has on his main so he can "collect them all" on "one character."
I think you need to post screen shots of the bug you get when you try to claim your Veteran and Tribble Testing Rewards that give additional ship slots.
Then people might understand you don't have a problem with too many ships. You are at the maximum # of ship slots which caused rewards you've earned to be bugged.
That would have been better understood than posting stuff about collecting ships. And you wouldn't have gotten the attention of posters like Maina who have made a game of posting against anyone who complains to Cryptic.

Very bad example. We would either allow the customer to get a different flavor/brand of Mac and Cheez (replace 1 slot purchase with something else of equal value), or allow the you to use your coupons anyways (IE force his rewards through with Dev mojo, and give him something nice for his trouble) , but that's modern supermarket 101.

thank you guys for backing me up. 28 is such a bad number when they promote ships and allow people to collect then like this. the limit MUST be extended if this is to continue. not just for my sake. but for everyones.
i would love to have more ship slots i know that i takes up server space and thats why you buy more servers but can we not even have just a few more slots.
This is just silly, there is no need to waste server space or for the devs to waste time coding just for a small minority that think they need every ship in the game, there is more important stuff the devs need to focus on like more episodes, more STFs, more pvp levels.

Actually, with the dev's apparently spending more and more time adding new ships to the game every month, this game is fast becoming a 'collect all the ships' game, if thats the direction they want to keep going in, then this issue really does need addressing, more so with more ships been added to the game now that can not be reclaimed if you dismiss them.
Everything Suricata is saying is what this game is evolving into. Sadly I have a few Shiny Mewtwo's but I am not willing to kill my Limited Time Celebi's
That is true... that won't really be a problem now, but what about the next lockbox? Or the next Lockbox? Or the next Lockbox?
If the Tholian lockboxes are any indication, every future lockbox will have more than one ship. Even if they're just re-tools (Like the Terran ships) they're still unique, and we will run into big problems if they continue like this. (Or we get some way to reclaim them)
with all the money they are making off of lockboxes they could get a ton of 3Terrabite External Harddrives and extend the capabilities of the server.
Please, if you do not know much about computer science, please do not propose fixes for problems you do not understand.
Most likely, the ships do not take up much memory and storage capacity is not an issue. It surely has something to do with limitations or bugs in the code which cause excessive computational cycles, memory leaks, or some such problem that leads to lag or instability.
It is really something they should fix, but they have limited resources and so long as the game is generally working (perhaps less than 1 in 1000 players get anywhere near the ship limit) they probably want to use their programmers to address critical bugs or develop new features.
Actually I understand quite a bit of computer science. Also if the code is so limited. it shouldn't be using the Champions Host. Perhaps something new. Something seperate from Champions and Neverwinter.
