We already have DS9 and Earth Spacedock to get mail, exchange, bank. What would our own fleet starbases offer that the existing starbases don't?
T5 versions of lower tier ships, as well gear and equipment you cant get anywhere else, as well as new dailies. However, you dont actually "need" any of that.

That is sort of like asking "Why do I need dessert?" You don't. But it is nice to have it.
Starbases are the same thing. Not really needed, but something to do with your fleet pals that is a tangible goal to work for, giving you something to do in the game. Also, a lot of us that have been at endgame for a couple of years like having something to finally spend all of our amassed resources on.

There is many different points why we need fleet Starbases:
1. Its more content
2. Devs have talked about it for a long time
3. more stuff to do at end level
4. Once you reach a high shipyard tier then you can get fleet ships that have 5% more hull and other stuff.
5. It has things from all the different starbases and social zones: Doff places, skill trainers etc
And it is overral a place that fleets can make and contribute as a fleet and the starbases make being in a fleet worth while.

There are also advanced gear and ships at the lower end of starbase construction.
Even if a fleet advances to Tier I in Military, Engineering, or Science, advanced gear and ships are available.
Tier 1 engineering gives better personal weapons and armor.
For example, on Tribble, I was in a fleet that got to Engineering Tier 1, and I was able to buy a Mark 12 antiproton rifle from a fleet starbase vendor, which was better than my current Mark 11 on Holodeck.
And Tier 1 in Science gives better personal shields.
Higher tier advancement in Science gives transwarp capability (presumably from the starbase) to Zeta Andromedae, Battle Group Omega, and Orellius sectors which the Excelsior does not transwarp to.

So it ain't just high level ships that are available through fleet advancement.
You don't "need" a starbase to enjoy STO. It's there to enhance the game for players.
You don't "need" any of the other races available from the ZenStore to enjoy STO. They are there to enhance the game for players.
You don't "need" a fleet as you're already a member of Starflee/KDF. They are there to enhance the game for players.
You don't "need" any of the colored gear to enjoy STO. The uncommon, rare and very rare gear is there to enhance the game for players.
Enjoy your STO your way!
I totally agree. But if the OP feels s/he "needs" advanced gear and ships for enjoyment, fleet starbases are one source of such gear and ships. It may take a lot of time and resources, or the OP may have to join an advanced fleet.
