A big no. For some reason, my mind connects Atari with incomplete games that were great ideas but got published before they were finished. Don't remember all titles exactly, but I think Master of Orion 3 was their fault as well.

Judging by their site, they're sort of half-coasting on old titles that they inherited.

I'm playing a Atari published MMO Tera. It's a really good AAA MMO unlike like this C multi-player online. You can blame Atari for everything if you like but Cryptic made this game and managed it. Cryptic was losing money and had to be cut loose.

I think they got a look at Neverwinter which was suppose to be released near the time of the divestment. Then decided to cut their loses with Cryptic. PWE did extend the development time on it, after they bought Cryptic.

It's nothing new for Cryptic, Microsoft pulled out of Champions with Marvel. Atari wasn't as big of a problem like many believe. Cryptic doesn't make very good games.

Not at all. Personally I think PW picking up Cryptic has been one of the better moves for the game yet. I'm very pleased with the way things are going currently.

    This!

Am I the only that remembers how STO almost got cancelled (sometime between S2 and S3 I think) because Cryptic needed a publisher since Atari was dumping them?

    Yes ... and no .

I miss the first 13 months of Cryptic development under Atari .
In fact I will go so far as to ask if there is any player who thinks that Cryptic will ever reach that amount of playable content that they put out in their first 13 months of STO :

    4 STF's , 3 FE's , 8 KDF missions , building the Foundry .

Does anyone out there think that Cryptic will ever put out this much STO content again (replayable + Story content) in such a relatively short time period ?

Aaand there was also a 'No" to my answer .
That has to do with the last 6 months of Atari ownership . It's obvious why no one would want to go back to that ... -- but at the same time , I think that that period unjustly overshadows a much larger and better time of productivity under Atari that a great many fans of the game misjudge .

    ---

In short , I think that Cryptic's performance under PWE pales in comparison to their first 13 months on many levels .

BTW Kirksplat ... -- are you Kirkfat ?

It is the lesser of two evils... So yes... I miss Atari. They were not good by any stretch but they were so much further towards the good from PWE that they could not phone each other without racking up a monstrous bill.

You don't have to miss Atari. For 99c, you can play I Love Strawberries right now.

    You're overplaying Atari's role.

They're responsible for North American distribution, under agreement by the actual publishers (Frogstar Interactive/Blue Hole/En Masse). Atari gets to stick their Logo on the box in exchange for being responsible for shipping -- not exactly a starring role in a games production.

    No.

The only thing Atari contributed to the game was their logo.

And they bought the logo from the original non-Infogrames Atari.

I never actually got to play on one, but I think it takes the cake for one of the worst controllers I've ever seen.

No, I don't miss Atari. For the last year that STO owned Atari, development had halted. If Atari still owned STO, there'd be no Duty Officer system, no Gamma Quadrant Featured Episode, and no Season 6. They might have even shut down the game by now. So no, I don't miss Atari.

I can't believe that I'm asking this question. But I am.

What were the drawbacks? No investment in STO. Dumb marketing fiascos. No cups in the break room.

But, it did seem like Cryptic was left to do its own thing as an independent entity.

    Does anyone miss Atari?
