I have learned that not only is there an UP and DOWN in outer space... The Klingons live in the South (Eta Eridani Sector Block) and DS9 is out West of us. North of us is the Alpha Centauri Sector and East is the Regulus Sector... not much there.
The big shock came when I found out by looking at the Galaxy map...
Earth is the center of the Universe.
I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings, but I was more impressed by Spore's Galaxy map years ago.
I learned that one should not call in a tactical team while doing the Tholian event. I watched as a poor squad of Redshirts scream, burst into flame, and disappear. It wasn't me who called them in, I was playing an engineer at the time.
But while watching that horrific scene, I also learned, "This game is a Star Trek game after all!"
I learned to be careful what I asked for, because I might just get it, but in a way I don't like.
(700 Zen for canon EV suits with stats more or less the same as Tholian grind ones, per-character unlock only and no way to equip a full away team with them)
Laws of thermodynamics as applied to life: 0 - You must play the game. 1 - You can't win. 2 - You can't break even. 3 - You can't quit.
I learned the old, senile, Klingon, transporter officer in the shipyard, must have friends high up in the Empire. Under a system where incompetence is punishable by death, he is still, very much, alive, and retaining his job. Despite continuously, beaming me back to the shipyard, when I wish to leave.
I also learned that RCS thrusters, when applied inside a starbase, are capable of applying the delicate, precise, maneuvers (360 degree turns, 360 degree turns in reverse, etc...) that allow multiple 700 meter long starships to dock along side each other, without any catastrophic, incidents, or collisions. Yet in open space, my cruiser turns like a bus, with four flat tires.
I learned that if you even have one... JUST ONE beam/cannon damage type weapon that's different from the other three to five beam weapons in your arsenal (all the same damage type), you're considered a rainbow ship... and thus the laughing stock of all STO players out there...
*sings* "I like Gammera! He's so neat!!! He is full of turtle meat!!!"
"Hah! You are doomed! You're only armed with that pathetic excuse for a musical instrument!!!" *the Savage Beast moments before Lonnehart the Bard used music to soothe him... then beat him to death with his Fat Lute*

I learned even STO has dregs chat and happiness is turning that channel off.

I also learned to double check if I have an engine on my ship when switching vessels.

I've also learned at times, chat can be... interesting. And at other times it can get so bad I'll join an STF just to work it out of my system...

I learned best place to listen to local and zone chat is Ker'rat. You can have some surprisingly philosophical conversations while killing each other there.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

Always welcoming new Members. Check us out here!
You can get a BOFF trainer once your Starbase reaches Tier IV, according to the tooltip in-game.
I've learned that it only takes 5 seconds to swap out the entire starships deflector dish
I've learned not to have an emotional attachment to my crew members and to swap and trade them out like playing cards.
I've learned Warp core breaches only last anywhere from 15 seconds to 2 minutes, after that, the ship will reset itself.
I have also learned that some people will insist they know everything about the game, especially how to build beautiful Rainbow Oddys.
I have learned that some people take something WAY to seriously in this game.
...oh wait.
(I do enjoy the gameplay and DS9 lulz though, which is why I'm here despite it all!)
Toilets? I've been using the teleporter to beam the waste directly out of my lower colon into space.
I learned that to a lot of people optional is the same thing as mandatory.
I learned that bridge officers have the same value as carbon paper and even have the same I.Q.
That is NOT from air vents... be afraid, be very very afraid.
But while watching that horrific scene, I also learned, "This game is a Star Trek game after all!"

But in the center of the universe, we are all alone. /headbang \m/
I learned that the Federation prospers when fighting a 7 front war. Why didn't we think of that sooner!
