How does recycling work?

Hey guys I started the game today and I am still confused be the recycle and retrieve tabs in the replicator. Maybe the answer is too obvious for me, however, I still can't get it to work.

    The replicator works the same as a vendor. The Recycle tab is basically the "Sell" option. The replicator gives 40% of an item's EC value. Vendors range from 30% (Ferengi, some civilians) to 50% (most military), so if you're trying to maximize your money the replicator isn't the best choice, but it's a good way to purge our inventory without going back to a starbase.

    And the 'retrieve' or 'buy back' tab is for those moments when you say, 'I didn't want to delete that' as the 'recycled' objects will remain in the buy back tab untl you change/leave the current scene..
