What's up with Raptors?

first off, hello forums! This here's my first post.

with that out of the way-
I don't consider myself a complete noob to Klingon. My tac Klingon captain is level 47 right now, and I'm flying the Qin raptor. However, I've noticed that Raptors seem to be a pretty uncommon ship when I look around the sector block- most are cruisers, BoPs, or carriers. So, my first question is, Am I flying the wrong ship or something?

I just started doing STFs with him, and so far I'm the only raptor I've ever seen in one, between my VA Vulcan and this guy. I seem to die a lot and not do that much damage- I know this is because my build isn't complete yet, because I just recently learned how to really get it going(Something I should have remembered from EVE- thanks forums!). I always have the power settings towards weapons, but I have put torpedoes in the fore and aft, and a mine launcher for story missions, although I suspect I might not need any of them- which leads me to my second question; are torpedoes and/or mines (discounting the tractor beam mines, since I might actually use them as a hold in STF's) actually necessary on a Raptor? And on a side note, would dual cannons or dual heavies be a better choice (I currently use dual heavies all across the fore except for the torpedo launcher, and I experience no power problems)?

My guess (just from my own observations) is that the Bird Of Prey gives you more speed, universal bridge officer slots, and battle cloak. In exchange you lose a tac console slot, an ensign slot, a rear weapon, and 1/3 your hull. Basically you trade a little bit of firepower for a lot more versatility and customizability.

I think the main reason people dont fly Raptors is that they still turn badly. They seem to turn from astern instead of in the middle so cannot compare with a Fed Escort. Saying that I keep a Raptor as my ship of choice when doing a KDF side STF (except on my toon which has a Kar'fi carrier).

Note also that I havent flown my Raptor for a month or two so the turn angles may have been fixed recently :crosses fingers:

Yeah, the turn rate is a major problem leading to people often using BoPs instead. I still like flying the raptor occasionally because if its large amount of boffs and extra tactical console compared to the BoP.

If you like the raptor and don't mind the C-Store try the Guramba. It's a great ship.

Raptors are mostly on a whole inferior (Turnrate, Boff choice, 3 ensign tac = bad for cannons.) to their federation counterpats, so those who want to fly escorts typically stick to the Fed side. There's enough overlap between it and the Bird of Prey within the KDF that there's little reason not to just go whole hog and fly a BoP either.

    Both reasons tend to contribute.

The Guramba is quite good however, because it has the fleet escort Boff layout. I generally go blue when I want to be an escort, though.

Raptors are sweet, dont letm tell ya different. Yes the turn rate sucks, but you can over come that with omega and good throttle control. And its a hole lot tougher than the BoP. And I think that 4th tac console makes a big difference.

For an STF try this out.

    3 heavy cannons, 1 torp
    3 turrets

tac team 1, high yield 2, omega 1, rapid fire 3
tac team 1, beta 1, rapid fire 2
    high yield 1

power to shields 1 and 2

hazard emitter 1, transfer shields 2

settings something like 100/25/50/25. depending on your skills and where you get extra power.

Use the omega if you need to break a tractor beam, chain the power to shields and tac teams. keep the rapid fire going and you should be good. If you need to turn quick hit evasive and reverse. Use whatever shield/engine/deflector. And always hit distribute shields.

Oh and get the borg console from "assimilation" mission if you dont have it.

People are so spoiled by raiders! Ha.

Qin turns just like a Fleet Escort.

I don't get the dislike... The top Tac consoles, plenty of Tac boffs, and cloak. What's not to like?

Been thinking of picking one up to grind STFs -- my one char usually flies a Varanus, but it's anemic in STFs.

That's pretty much my set up, except I trade a Rapid fire and High Yield for Scatter and Spread.

One of the reason I switched from the BOP was because almost everyone uses it. This is not a bad thing, I think every KDF captain should know how to fly a BOP and if my fleet asked me to switch I could.

The discussion for Dual Heavy vs Dual is really about procs. If your using a weapon type for Procs like Tetryon for example you should run Dual, if your going for raw DPS like say Antiproton pack the Dual Heavies.

Dual Heavy have far superior burst under Rapid Fire, and both Cannons do the same DPS.

Always dual heavy. If you're in a raptor you should be going for highest spike, which will come from heavies. for procs single cannons or turrets are better than duals.

My sci captain has a Varanus, but it's not a great ship for STFs (where dps is king), so picked up a Qin.

Wow. LOADS of fun, and I can make up for lapses in the team. I'm having so much fun I'm not sure I'll want to go back. Heh.

I'm not sure as the Raptor's all I have, but it's a sweet ship. The BoP is faster, and a better turn rate, but the Raptor has more versatility with the Boff slots. Great for a tac, and it's the favorite ship I fly right now.
