just took a peak at the new ground skill changes so far liking the new changes noticed abit of weakening in space but i feel that the loss in space was balanced by what was gained on the ground.
in the past the selection of ground skills were limited and many of the kits i gravated towards needed at least 5 diff skills to rly make them sing now i only have to pick the 2 kit skills that work the best for my favored kits.
as ppl have posted about the loss this is easily solved 1 of 2 ways way 1 raising the skill/lvl cap or by reducing the skill cost. these options of course r all ultimately up to the perogative of our dedicated and hardworking dev team.
Yay DX11 Support. As others have asked, is there anything we need to do specifically to make DX11 is turned on and working, anything you Devs specifically want us to test?
I'll try to get on and test out the skill revamp. PreS5 my main character (Tac/Cruiser) was mostly spec'ed for Space, but had a respectible number of ground points that improved his DPS (9s in all three: Assault Training, Soldier, Firearms).
After S5 I was able to more-or-less retain my Space spec, but at the expense of Ground. To keep Space as close to the same as possible (which still resulted in an overall nerf to several abilities) I had to severly gimp my Ground build, and I lost about 20% of my Ground DPS.
I hope this NewNewSkillRevamp balances things out better.
1) You must be running Windows 7 or Vista.
2) Open your video options.
3) Click "Show advanced video settings".
4) Scroll down and click on the Troubleshooting tab.
5) Under "Video Card (restart required)" select one of the "direct3d 11 - Beta" video card options.
6) Accept your changes and /quit out of the game.
Tada!
I've also got some notes from our graphic guys that are more specific and I'll add those to the release notes.
If I can't respec, how can I allocate my new skill points? ......
You can re-spend all your skillpoints after we wipe them from you. You just can't go respec after that. Good news is that we have a fix for that already that we're hoping to get to Tribble today.
I've added this to the patch notes, but I'm making a new post, too.
I've talked to our lead graphics programmer about changes y'all would want to know about. Here's what he had to say:
This release contains DirectX 11 support. This new rendering API can drive video cards supporting DirectX 10 and higher (10.1, 11, 11.1). The initial release is essentially a port of our DirectX 9 rendering features to DirectX 11. The game should mostly look the same, as we have not added a lot of support for newer DirectX 11 features, were just getting a base from which we will continue adding such features.
We have not ported all low-end video settings support, just mid-level and high-end features. Therefore, under the DirectX 11 rendering option, there may be some graphics problems with Video Options slider set all the way to the left (the Speed side of the slider). Also, on hardware that only supports DirectX 10, like Nvidia GeForce 8800s and 9800s, when Antialiasing is enabled we do not currently support many depth-dependent Video effects. This includes High-quality shadow mode, depth-of-field, and some others. This is because Nvidia and ATI have not provided us a special driver back door we have available under DirectX 9, and we have not had time to do a potentially much more expensive work-around.

what about the Invaled Class being displayed at the bottom of the skill tree window and not being able to accept your re skill?

Okay, that explains it, thanks! Still want to know if "Auto" will auto detect I have DX11 and use it so I don't have to select "Geforce 480GTX DX11 [1]" or "Geforce 480GTX DX11 [2]"

I'll try this at home tonightm but damn was the video flickering something fierce last night when I started up tribble....
No matter what setting I tried it only got worse. Holodeck works fine though... Did file a bug report. Can't remember the number, but I will try these tonight.

No, it won't. That's why you have to change your settings.
I just gave DirectX 11 a try, and met with not so favorable results.
All the skin textures look like they have undergone some kind of darkmatter inversion.
Hands and legs are all black, and the faces of myself and other players and NPC's range from mottled black spots to complete black nothingness.
Environment and clothing textures appear to be unaffected.
Running an Nvidia GeForce GTX470 on Windows 7 64-bit.
Nvidia driver version 285.62
Also experienced complete lock up and crash of the game when tabbing to desktop and trying to tab back in again.
Using a Gainward GTX 460 GLH with driver version 285.62 runing on Win7 x64.
With high shadow settings and DX11 i get big black artifacts instead of neat shadows.
Reducing shadow quality to low fixes the bug but also reduces GFX quality.
beyond this did not notice anymore troubles and improved or reduced framerate sofar.
Works fine for me. But dad has the exact same system as me. I mean out computers are identical to the individual parts, yet when he plays in DX11 everything is black.. Weird.
Ble I dont like the power split at all... Now I can'T even use the same thing in space then before and I have to spent skill in ground when i dont use then as much at all.... the artificial cap sucks hard...
To Zeronius Rex and all the cryptic devolpment team,
I for one don't appreciate the skill tree change I feel it is insulting that you are going to tell me where I have to spend my skill points I am very upset and disturbed by this and I feel that if I want to be space heavy then that is my option, and I feel like you guys are doing way to much crappy stuff I can't even get a full slot in the admiral slot's what is the point in playing this game if you guys are going to keep TRIBBLE with it and making it worse . If you really want to do something make more missions or like some of the people said seperate the skill trees and leave the option of where and how we use our skill points to us the game player.
Lol...If anything the new system is better and a welcome change. I can pvp effectively and can fill out a specific role during ground stf's (tanking/healing/damage). Go on tribble and fiddle with specs, you'll find not much has changed space wise.

I have been on tribble and I so do not like it it severly made my ship weak. I just wish they would leave the TRIBBLE alone they already changed the skill tree once lets just leave it alone
srsly wth.. now I have to spent even more points on stuff I dont need to.. you only can level up a skill when you reach either full gren, yellow or red stage... meaning no partial leveling anymore... WTF....
This kills my whole build.. and this also will lead to even more cookie cutter build then before.. now you can't even squeeze a view skillpoint out of another skill to retain your previous specs...
I thought when I droped my tyken rift abbility I could get away with it.. but NO...
I MAD NOW...
Edit:
Something wrong here... It constantly tells me I dont have spent enough points even the the category is already unlocked and it gives me totaly scrwed up respec options...

I 100% agree here. Less options is never a good thing, especially when forcing us to skill up in aspects of the game that a lot of us care nothing for.

The problem with respec should be fixed by now -- we updated Tribble.
As for your other point, it's completely untrue. You still level up your skill with each rank you put into it. The new UI merely illustrates the diminishing returns.

The second one is the bug I referred to in your quoted text.
The first is also already addressed in an internal build.
thank you for explaining i wonderd why it looked exactly the same

Alright thanks, I did it by hand just to make sure, was curious if I was going to have to do that when it hits live.

Do you have WIn7 and a DX11 card?
Ah, no, I don't use Win7, I'm still on Vista, that explains it lol
