What's Wrong with my Fighters?

Okay, so here is the story...

I am on a daily red alert mission against a borg boss in Pi Canis. Our team is a bit "light" but I figure we can take a shot at it.

In any case, several times during the boss phase only, for no apparent reason, all of my deployed fighters -- to include the scorpions I put out there -- would suddenly turn around and congregate on my ship despite the fact that I had the boss Borg targeted and was laying down supporting disruptor fire! They would completely lose target lock for some reason...and would not re-acquire, despite the fact that my Vo'Qov was fully engaged and laying down disruptor fire.

Then, in all instances, once all of my fighters were comfortably around me -- just like I had destroyed my enemy and they are coming in for a well-deserved mug of bloodwine, I blow up, taking all of them with me -- and I blow up from about 100 hull strength...without being hit by anything that I could see.

I know that the Borg boss has some uber weapons that can cause a ship to be one shotted...but that normally is not the case in a Vo'Qov -- I usually have just enough hull to survive the initial hit, and enough heals and resists to survive long enough to somewhat recover...but what bothers me is that my fighters did not stay on target -- they broke off their attack, and nothing I could do could get them back into the fight, other than launching new fighters. Even when I launched new fighters, and they would dutifully head towards the Borg Boss with a song in their hearts, my previous waves of fighters would still huddle around me like a bunch of scared ducklings looking for their mother!

Is this some sort of bug, or -- as they say in some IT circles -- "it's not a bug! It's a feature!"

I suspect that it could be a mechanic in the game that forces carriers into engagement range...and which might not allow them to stand off and launch waves of fighters at the Borg Boss...but isn't that exactly what a Carrier is supposed to do?
