Too soon for Free to play

I think personally it is much too soon for Star Trek online to go Free to Play.

Star Trek Online is not even two years old. I understand the Devs wanting to give Anyone and EVERYONE a chance to get into the game. But I think Cryptic has made a mistake, trying to push it this soon, especially with this major upgrade in season four at the same time.

I just think they should have waited 8-12 more months to get more content into the game, more missions, more features. And when they don't have anything massive like this on their plate, Then work on a server that has Free-to-Play features.

It's not entirely a bad thing, but all the season 4 content, and working on the free to play features, I think Cryptic may may have bitten off more then they can chew. Still I could be wrong, I do think the changes to the gold server could be interesting and I do like STO enough that I bought a life time subscription, and I like HOW and Where STO's direction is going, so far. So I will keep a positive and open mind for these changes.

It isn't really too soon for free to play, it is this implementation that is the issue. A hybrid system might have worked were the game more complex than it is but a strict Asian style F2P system is unacceptable as well. There needs to be a middle ground where the subscribers have a reason to continue subbing and the f2p audience is taken care of as well, I don't even know that they looked into that because this system is being rushed into place so quickly.

But on the other hand, arguably STO Is the perfect game to go F2P. F2P games rely on a large rotating pool of beginner players. They don't need a lot of content, which is something STO excels in. F2P games only need enough content around for casual players to pick up for a month or two, make one or two impulse microtransaction purchases, and then quit. The amount of missions in STO only fill up maybe 2 months of dedicated play, so there is more than enough there to satisfy the typical F2P player.
