Guardian of Forever's new voice

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
To put it simply...it sucks. The old voice was closer to the TOS voice in the show than this POS.

The Guardian now sounds like a guy that was kicked multiple times in the nuts.

Put the original back in.

Oh my gosh, yes the new voice is horrid. I cringed every time it spoke, quickly forcing the dialogues to close so the horrid voice would stop talking.

    Plllllleeeeeease fix it!

    Yes, please change it back.

The older version sounded a lot better, when the Guardian speaks "you listen", didn't really have that same feeling with the new VO.

Aye, I'm also someone who prefers the old voice. The new voice isn't bad... but the old voice (even if some considered it cheesy) was closer to what was in the TOS episode. I would recommend another go at it. See if you can find a better balance between cheese voice and the new one. :)

Did the old voice sound hokey, and cheesy, and overly dramatic? Yes.

Thus old voice was perfect since so did the Guardian of Forever in TOS.

I haven't gotten there yet, so I'll reserve judgement on the new voice... but I will say that the old voice was acceptable.

well in my opinion, the new voice seems better acted (though someone went a little overboard with the audio effects, which makes it a little hard to understand in places), but it's just nowhere near the voice that was within the TOS episode. The original voice, as wooden as the acting performance was, was much, much closer to the Guardian we all remember from our childhoods.

the old one was fine, it was not that close to the tos one if you compare them but it was cheesy and that was fine.

the new voice is fine but im not sure its any better or needed adjusting.

if you are going to sort out voice work how about redoing harkeev from the second ep of cloaked intentions. its a different voice from his appearances in eps 4 and 5.

    This.

Also I just dont get why a mission that already HAS a voiceover gets a new one instead of... well one of the dozends of missions that do not have ANY voice over.
Thats just... so typical for todays cryptic and perfectly shows why the game failed: Its not the limitet resources, its making use of them on the wrong places.

These type of over dramatic, angst ridden comments always make me laugh. Funny sir, usually when a game FAILS, the server is shut down, subscribers leave, people are laid off from the studio...
In a recent interview with STOked, Stephen D'Angelo told us that the new switch to Perfect World has been a godsend to the company, HUGE hiring push to keep up with the massive content landslide thats coming, subscriptions have been steadily climing... so really, lets lay off the self-serviant ignorant 'fail' statements. Especially when it comes to random tacky TINY details like a minor voiceover change.

I have to agree with the op here. The new voice is downright dreadful. I was clicking on the prompts just to exit out the voice. I know some people say that the voice was cheesy, but it sounded like the guardian's voice from TOS. Please change the voice modulation levels back to what they were.

Here's an EMH impression I did on a lousy mic, intended for a site detailing STO's costumes that was going to be modeled on WoW's Breanni's pet site and the Hunter resource Petopia:

    Here's my Tomalak:

Here's my Data, done as a little tribute to ThomastheCat's hiring by Cryptic (done off the top of my head, there's some subtle differences I would make with severity, depth and pronunciation after listening to Spiner again):

    Here's a vaguely Connery-esque Klingon:

A Daffy Duck-ish take on an alien, based on comments by the writer who envisioned him sounding like a monster version of Daffy Duck:

I've been getting better and more sophisticated with recording:

Also did some voiceover for my last Foundry trailer:

I'm really looking for a chance to get a good voiceover tape and jealous of the STOked guys for getting to record VO in-studio during their visit. Given the relative costs, I'd fly out to Los Gatos (via San Fran) and spend a couple of days recording, pretty much just to get my hands on a quality demo tape and a resume credit, for pretty much the minimum.

From my POV, two days of studio time might actually cost me more than a trip to Cryptic HQ and wouldn't give me a resume credit.

Enough about that, though. The Guardian!

I also agree, the new voice over is HORRIBLE! It just sounds like someone sitting in a studio reading lines, its just bad.

Was the first one over-acted? Perhaps, but it sounded JUST like the original guardian! It was fine.

No Gverb or anything. Cold reading of one of the lines from the STO mission. It's not a perfect Bart LaRue but a higher quality take witrh some bass and gverb and it's closer. There's something I think the Cryptic VO is lacking.

hate the new voice, its to heavily processed to sound right and just comes off like a very bad VO. At least the old one had an original series twang of 60's naf-nes about it.

The new voice is hilarious makes me wonder if the Guardian has some sort of Tribble caught in it's throat!

Its either that or Professor Hawking is hiding behind a rock as the ventriloquist using his voice synth. ^^

Lets hope the Guardian gets over whatever strange malady it's having before F2P launch.

I would prescribe it to take two and call in the morning if it gets worse... infact lay off the NO2 too!

Agreed, the new voice isn't as god as the old one.

It's not. The tone and inflections are different. It's a new voice over and it sounds like someone is just talking into a fan. The old voice over was much much closer to canon. I absolutely abhor the new voice over. Do not roll this horrible change to Holodeck.

Ye the new voice needs just does not sit right, the old voice was just right for the mission. imo more work on new VO's for other missions are needed in gen as I just skip the dialogues as is anyways or just skim them if its story related to the main missions.

Wait, they replaced the awesomely terrible Guardian of Forever VO?!

This makes me so mad, I [insert garden variety "Crytic sucks" rant here], and I mean it!

    That's pretty good...

Just slow it down a bit... need to pause a bit longer between sentances... The booming voice of the original, was in part because the actor paused to let the reverberation/echo have more of an effect. :)

I don't know, I actually appreciated the change. I might have to listen to it again, but I liked that it was less cheesy and a little distorted, like you might expect from an ancient device on an abandoned planet.

Then again, I also liked the Vulcan air controller. Some people can't hear it without imagining her holding her nose, but to me it just sounded like a little comm tinnyness.
