I know that past promises have been broken. I know that we have been ignored since launch for the most part -- thrown a bone here and there, but really no serious development when compared to the Federation. I know that we have seen exclusive Klingon abilities handed out like candy to the Federation faction (cloak, Har'peng)...they have nearly everything we do, except for a Carrier variant and a battle cloak...and even then Cryptic has addressed carriers by constantly nerfing them into oblivion because of complaints from the Federation, as well as providing a device that turns any ship into a mini-carrier. I guess that the strategy of "if I can't have it, then lobby to get it neutered" sort of worked.
But...hopefully, all of that is about to change. Not overnight...not instantly...but change is coming.
I say give Cryptic a clean slate and let's see what direction it goes in. Like you, I am dissapointed with what has happened with the KDF...but I am looking at the big picture, an the big picture clearly shows that things have shaken up from the top down for once...and when there is change on that scale, opportunity often knocks. Let's give them yet another chance to do the right thing by the KDF, and see where it goes.
I hear you, ZTempest. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt....but it is a huge doubt to overcome.
Right now, all we have is the Devs telling us what PWE has said. I'm having a hard time taking them at their word.
It feels like much of this year's development was lost to getting the game ready for F2P and the new players they hope to bring in rather than developing the game for the current playerbase. Dstahl has mentioned that much of the new content is being held for the F2P release (unless I'm reading him wrong). I'm disappointed that in their work to get STO ready for F2P, the only consideration the KDF seems to get is to have their levels cut somewhere between 35 to 39% and the entire faction unlocks at level 25.
They tell us they are hiring more staff. They tell us the KDF will get some sort of an expansion next year that will fill in levels 1 to 18/21 (whatever the last post said it was). They won't commit to when though other than it is planned for 2012. We're getting one season this year. Reading between the lines, it doesn't look like the KDF faction is on the table for Season 5. So, I'm not confident it is coming next year. And I see this happening already: expectations for the Klingon expansion are growing, and with this long delay, the expectations are going to be for something larger than the Devs are likely to deliver. Terms and phrases like "full-fledged," "fleshed out," and "on par with the Federation" are getting thrown around. A lot of players have a lot of big ideas as to what that means.
As for me, I'm trying to temper my expectations. When I play, I have been trying to relish the opportunities with other members of the faction. The disparity between the factions is huge in terms of player numbers and content (but I don't have to remind anyone of that). I have a bad feeling that things are going to get a lot worse before they get better for a long time. I don't mean to be a downer, I'm just being honest.
I must repeat a question that forces me to play devil's advocate:
All of the television episodes and films of Star Trek have been (and likley will continue to be) about the *Fed* side of the universe. Of course, there is a vast amount of Klingon Lore throughout canon Star Trek, and mountians of non-canon novels that focus on the Klingons. But fundamentally, Star Trek is a *human* experiance.
How is it a surprise, then, to find that STO's KDF faction only recieves about 1/10th of the attention as do the FEDs? Isn't it a stretch to expect more than about 10% of STO's juice? Can you really describe your experiance as being *less than a tenth* of what the FEDs have?
I suppose my ultimate point is that it may not be truly correct to view the KDF faction with the same expectations as one would the FED faction, and to do so is only setting oneself up for heartache. Leveling up a KDF alt around captain is pretty horrible, but I never went into it expecting the same experiance.
Hey - at least you get a Tier-5 Original Series Ship.....
Damn Cryptic and their hatred for Mirandas.....
Anyway, those are just a few of my thoughts. Thanks.
There were other games out there which portrtait the Klingons well and Cryptic annopunced the game to have 2 full factions, but stood down when they learned they hadn't the time to finish KDF before release.
And now they simply take away half the levels to cover their wrongdoing from the new F2P customers.
IMO when Cryptic took over the Star Trek licence for STO they bite off more then they could chew.
I'll bring up some concentrated ideas from the old anmd burried KDF content idea threads some time soon, perhaps that can help a bit.
Perfect World entertainment likes the idea of end content PvP.
To have this you need a balancing of the number of players in both factions. They dont have to be equal, but both factions must be equaly attractive to incoming players and have equal opportunities to advance ones character.
Bad Guy factions work quite well in MMO's.. please to note the presence of THE HORDE in world of warcraft as an example. Please also to note that Blizzard had the wisdon to not play favorites with thier two factions. This has a very great deal to do with WHY World of Warcraft is still king of the MMO's with anyone elses title lagging far far far behind in subscription numbers.. and WOW is not F2P if you want the good content.. but you can play up to level 25 for free.. Kind of an extended demo mode.
Klingon faction represents a clear minority of the player base of this MMO. Perfect World is not pleased with this as it makes for poor end game PvP which is a major costomer draw in F2P titles. Perfect world has decread it must change.
Now... for we the players of STO that choose to play and identify as KDF.. it cannot happen sufficently soon. Mostly because we have all been waiting a very great long time. Aparently it has taken new ownership to get the ball FINALLY rolling. Yes there will continue to be content for both factions rolling out. I suspect a great deal of it is actually done and is perhapes getting a bit more polish internally on the red shirt shard, but is for now on hold awaiting F2P to go live.. we all we find out next week when it goes to test on Tribble. I will be on Tribble doing my part to break things, find exploits, imbalances, and problems and help slam them shut.
But.. KDF content is long over due for a multi faction MMO. Cryptic has a very great amount of ground to make up and we the KDF have to deal... VERY UNHAPPILY... with a temporary solution which is starting KDF at a higher level..doing a little to throttle back the amount of new players that should be coming in with F2P that will consider KDF play ( which, just as a little aside I think is doomed to failure... all that will be achived there is to make everyone equally unhappy.. not a good idea.. and makeing the F2P crowd unhappy is an even worse idea!) Thats going to have to be addressed in very very short order. Certainly before the end of this year.. and in all honesty really needs to be fixed before F2P rolls out if at all possible.
Several things will need to be done.. KDF space needs to double in side or more following the same paradyme as UFP space..3 to 4 core sectors blocks each with missions apporpriate to the rank of players in that area wich is what the game should have started with.
ANd let us get something strait and real... This is going to happen. I must happen. If this is going to be a successfull F2P MMO there are no options other then this happening. The fed only club has to end.
It would be better for the game and everyone playing it if the Fed players got on board with this.
I have been one of Cryptics harshest critics starting around about halfway through season 2 when the supposed flood of KDF content never really materialized. I will belive it when I see it, but with the aquisition by Perfect World the dicision is not longer entirely in the hands of Crypic's develpment team.
PW has its own goals and vision for STO. and they didn't put 30 mil hard cash down just to save an ailing MMO title. They want an entry in to the US market. They want thier hands on the propriatory technologies that Cryptic has. And of course a shot to not only get those BUT an MMO dealing with an iconic intellectual property known the world over. And they got it for only 30 mil!!!! SCORE!
You honestly think that PW is going to permit business as usuall at cryptic with THIER rep on the line.. no insult inteneded but are you NUTS? PW expects to make a very great deal of money, and they most certainly know after looking over the product what STO needs to make that money over the long run.
The rank and file at Cryptic are likely as not secure in thier employment.. but executive producer types... Thats a different matter entirely. Daniel Stahl is at a put up or clear out point I am relitivly certain of. Its not a matter of choice for him. It is quite simply his job and rep on the line. He blows this and he might be able to get a job back at Atari leading teams in the exciting world of creating Android apps.
Ya know its like TREK.. and its a long long way down from space.. remember what Khan said.. in space to one can hear you scream..
Me, I'm feeling I can back off the flames myself because if it faction balance doesn't happen then this MMO is dead. dead DEAD. and within the year. If cryprtic doesn;t make it work PW will cut funding, and STO will be reduced to what amounts to a kiddie game "intro to MMO's" and a lesson in the industry of what NOT to do in a multi faction MMO.
I love Trek. I like playing a Klingon. Thats it with me and the vast majority of my fellow KDF players in a nut shell. There are many many many more potential KDF players out there... if they dont get chased off or ignored. If the KDF players do not appear, then there will not be any worthwhile end game PvP. And without it, STO will be hard pressed to succed because STO for all the bells and whistles is still a game, and a game without competition? ... Uhh well, how many of them to you know of?

Competition i like that... what sto needs is teritory control that would be great competiton all we have now is for bragging rights
pvp definetly needs a revamp another thing i think would work out is adding lil accoldades like in say call of duty of battle fileld say i kill you with ramming speed then i recieve your "dogtags" to add to my collection as example stuff like that would definetly increase playerbase and fun
but right now to me the best pvp action is kerrat and thats cuz i can almost always find a good fight in there and its way better then waiting 20 min(or more) to get into a arena wich just drives me nuts but i do like that i can queue in then go and do somthing else
Competition is the best word you could of used cuz that will help anything succeed look how well foot ball dose hahaha your a fan of your team and you buy merch for your team ect ect all that goes with it
right now all we have is a couple guys playing a game of "End game Catch" ........... who cares.......
It really annoys me to see people still whining the KDF arn't being developed. Look through the patch notes. Every single bit of content that has been released in the last 8 months has either been for both fed AND klingon or at least klingons have / will be getting the same treatment.
Feds got Retrofit ships at max level. Klingons got retrofit ships at max level.
ESD got a big revap. The First City got a big revamp.
Feds got the acadamy. Oh look klingons are getting their acadamy.
All the featured episodes are for both factions, borg invasion is for both factions, both sides have gotten an abundance of new costume options. While the feds got more clothing options the klingons had a LOT of work done on the Gorn. People seem to forget that.
If you klingon players feel you haven't gotten anything new recently up until a few weeks ago neither had the feds. Feds have had 2 new ships now, after much moaning from the "Pay to Win" crowd, the Rhode Island and the Venture. The Klingons are getting a new ship too (with possible the best console in game so far) and we know Cryptic are working on new ships for klingons at the moment a lot more than feds. Do the words "New ship skins for every tier" sound familiar?
So quit your ********* and accept that because your faction is the minority at the moment and its lucky to get equal treatment from Cryptic.
You call not fixing the lack of PvE an equal treatment? Go roll a KDF big talker and put your money where your mouth is. Cstore junk isn't content and it isn't what they have asked for FE series is just something for spam and isn't real KDF exclusive content. How about you sit down pal.
Nicely worded post OP, hit the nail on the head for the most part. I loved some of the PvE Klingon missions, rocking along destroying a shipyard in my K'Tinga (in a D7 skin ). Got put off half way through Commander though as it was just a grind. Will be interesting to see what happens when Infinite Space is released. Yes, it's a browser game. However, if the content is there... who knows? Many of you KDF captains thinking of switching to IS?

Well, duh. It is made by humans for humans. Starfleet however is NOT *human* organization. Star Trek universe is not a *human* universe. All that's besides the point. STO is a game. A game that was supposed to have 2 factions and battles for resources. If they decided to make a 'Starfleet Captain Simulator' instead they failed at that too. Exploration is a huge letdown. Diplomacy is pathetic. Cryptic is great at making promises. That's all.
There's a reason why STO is going F2P while WoW is still doing great. I just hope PW somehow miraculously brings STO back to what it was supposed to be. But since I've actually played Perfect World I fear they'll bring something else too.

Money sinks. $60 marriage packages, $30- $40 ships, a lot more casual outfits with random colors, more random colors you can buy to make the outfits actually bearable, automatic health/shield charges that become a necessity, paying to use global channels, etc.
I doubt it's going that far but Pay 2 Win is already here.
It would have been better not to allow Atari/ Cryptic to get its hand on the IP. A company with a decent stuff and achievable goals might have served the game much more then the fast shot it is now.
Although the game has come a long way since release much of the problems from then still exist. KDF is still a hollow shell and even the Feds are not as good as they could be.
