I'm levelling my Klingon Sci character, and while I'll deffinitely try Raptors, I was wondering how good the Garumba is? Would it work with a Sci character? I can imagine a 3 hit combo with tractor, subnuc and javelin being quite devestating, but how useable is siege mode? And siege mode aside, is their a comparable Fed ship? I've seen Garumbas wreak havoc, but I've also seen them do very little. Also, they are shockingly cool...
So if the Garumba pilots could fill me in on their experience with this ship I'd be mighty grateful.
Garumba's are great ships, and I've no doubt if you've found balance in science raptors you'll find a spot to love for the Guramba, but it is primarily engineering oriented over science given its boff slots.
Seige mode is good if you have support. You do not want to use the mode alone, it won't help you. Given the time it takes to build up the energy, and then line up a shot with the -50% to turn its difficult to do alone, but when you do its gratifying. I've one shot people with it.
I've got one captained by a ENG Naussican. It's a fun ship, but the javelin doesn't get much play in normal game play. If you play on advanced difficulty or higher it'll see more use, but on normal ships simply pop too quickly.
it has a fun factor. you do tend to spend far too much time trying to line the javelin up for your 'death star moment' at the expense of trying to do normal damage or stay alive.
if all you do is pvp then id probably stick to a raptor but in pve its a lot of fun and when you do hit your special attack its a great feeling.

4 box Tac / 3 box Tac / 1 box Eng / 2 box Eng / 2 box Sci...seems more Tactical oriented to me...
The Guramba is basically a Fed Fleet Escort (same BO layout) with a bit more hull and crew but 1 less engineering console.
You will loose a lot of turn rate and defense when in Siege mode, so its use is definitly situational. There were too many situations in PvE when I enjoyed the Death Star configuration and forgot to pay attention to my health. Basically you turn into a cruiser with the health and shields of an escort, so next to tacticals I would say engineers are the best choice.
Not saying you can't enjoy it as a science captain, but be prepaired that you will have difficulties lining your ship up in siege mode. For PvP you need heavy team support or an enemy that is asleep or you are toast.
That being said, it is a fun ship and the look is totally special. If you like it therefore, go for it. You just have to adapt to the weaknesses like you would have with every other ship.
Edit: Before you buy it, copy your character to tribble and test it. You can get free Lt. General tokens from the ship requisition guy and the Guramba is also available there.
If you have patience, wait until another 50% off ships sale...;)
It's a good escort, best used with fleet support, great for burst DPS.
But it is a little pricey in the Cstore.
You can fly it for free on Tribble to test it, beam to the shipyard, find the console with the "buy experimental ships" and take it for a test run.
Respec your captain there for it and it'll rock even more.

well i thought the siege was the kdf version of the RAF galaxy X. i dont rate them myself but each to there own.

The biggest issue I have with it is that the Javelin shares a cool down with Beam Overload while at the same time having an aggravating charge up mechanic. So if you use two Beam Overloads you're going to have to pass on one of them to use the Javelin.
It has the same bridge officer layout as the Federation Fleet Escort, you know, the Dervish. But if you're going to focus on charging up Javelin shots it's going to play quite a bit different. During siege mode the siege destroyer can not dog fight.

The Garumba Javelin has 4 Flaws:
1. You have to be in siege mode to enjoy it.
2. You have to charge it up.
3. It has the Arc of Dual/Dual heavy Cannons.
4. It has a long animation time before firing. During this time, you can't activate anything.
The Garumba, as has been stated, is a Fleet Escort with an Engineering console removed. While in Siege Mode, it's turn rate gets reduced, it's engine power gets dropped by 10, but it's Weapon power goes up by 10, and it's shield power goes up by 5. In addition any energy damage you deal, drains a VERY SMALL amount of weapon power and gives it to you. If you ever plan on using siege mode, you'll almost absolutely need beams. Both Single and Dual. I would recommend NOT relying on the Javelin. Ever. If you see a chance where your fully armed and operational battle station can unleash it's death on a target with the Javelin, fine. Other wise, don't use the Javelin if you can help it. It can get you killed just for a cool looking, yet limited Beam overload 3.
I don't recommend a Science officer in the Garumba if your planning to use the Javelin as your main damage dealing attack. Stick to a Raptor or a Bird of Prey.
An Engineer can do interesting in the Garumba. I've actually been flying it in almost exclusive siege mode with my Engineer. And it's kinda fun that way. I have 2 Beam Overload 3's to play with so I don't have to use the Javelin if I don't want to. Also Target engines 3 is a very nice option as well as it can slow targets down to a crawl and give you a way to get your front arc on the target.
Thanks for the replies guys, I tried it out on tribble with my tac earlier, and I will likely give the Garumba a miss for now. I can really see what you guys mean about how situational the Javelin is. The whole having to charge it up thing is awkward. I was kinda suprised how little damage it did considering all the work it took to get it ready and in position etc. And the conflicting with beam overload thing concerns me too, in my FE I can throw a BO-II out every 15 seconds, or two back to back if I time it right. The damage the Javelin does wouldn't justify interfering with that.
That said, if I had the time to copy my Engineer/Fleet Escort build KDF side, and altered the tactical powers (CRF instead of BO and cannons up front, turrets out back?) so as not to interfere with the Javelin, I think it could tank just fine in siege mode (I had three ships beating on me for ages in a Cap & Hold earlier), I don't see why evasive+reverse wouldn't help me keep cannons on target like I used to in a cruiser either. And if the Javelin got a buff, and it was on sale...
But my Sci guy's deffinitely not flying one. I'll give the Kar Fi a once over though, I can see serious potential there. If nothing else, I've gotten test driving on tribble out of this.
