Hi folks, I have a suggestion for the spacedocks currently in game (for federation and the new klingon spacedock), althoguh I'm using Fed side for this example.
Basically, the idea is to remove the excelsior model in the spacedock and replace it with the players current ship. I have made a mockup so you can see what I mean:-
This has been implemented in other space MMO's over the years, such as 'Earth and Beyond'.
Basically, when a player loads into the zone, the server looks at the players ship information and tells the client to show the appropriate ship model, this means that every player only see thier own ship there. So you don't have to worry about overloading peoples computers with everyone elses ships. The ship would be in the distance so that the polygon counts of the current models don't become an issue.
I know this is just 'fluff', but its a great way (IMO) to immerse players into believeing thier ship is actually docked at the space station. I can't imagine this been a hugly complecated thing to implement either, since there is no interaction with the ship model taking place, it could be a nice little side project for a dev to work on :-)

Live long and prosper.
But why only exchange the excelsior. Why not put your current ship in place of the galaxy, and have another of your ships instead of the excel. Or more of them...:D (just dreaming)
But a closer look at your current would really be cool.
The Galaxy there is an ultra high resolution edition, and a normal player ship there would actually be pretty ugly.
But, instead of replacing the Excelsior, why not just park your ship somewhere nearby it instead, to better give the impression of a working, busy-busy-busy dock?
Mind you, I'd rather that the current shipyard actually be slightly reduced in functionality, down to switching over your ship and purchasing and selling various ship-based common equipment, and move ship component crafting, ship customization and purchasing, and other things over to Utopia Planita, to give us a reason to be there besides 'ooooh, pretty'. Plus, you could do some cool things like having a personal shipyard where you can see all your ships parked and awaiting crewing as you fly around the area in a shuttle, or something.
So everyone sees their own ship in the same place? How would that work?
Player 2: What are you talking about? That's a Dervish!
There are also other significant technical difficulties with having you (avatar) and yourself (ship) show up on the same map... just for a mission. I would imagine trying to do that on a social map is even more challenging.
That is one of the issues with this system and one that was brought up in 'Earth and Beyond', however, in all my time playing that game I never encounted a situation where a random player came up to me and commented on a ship in the background :-P
The main idea behind it is to just add to the immersion of your ship been in spacedock
I don't think it is an issue with this particular use, if an MMO from several years could do it (you had a space and ground avatar in that game too) then I don't see why it would be an issue here. Like I said, the ship is stationary and not interactable, most of the times when players have wanted thier ship and captain visable together in missions there has been interaction between the 2 (althoguh I'm still not sure what the technical issue is, all the game has to do is access your charactors database and pull the ship config from it).
