I have been thinking this one over and i cant seem to understand this, so Im asking for a logical responce.
why do carriers have BoP pets?
This question came to me when when ever people talked about a fed carrier and they all said the "fighters" are warp capable, and dont need a carrier. I think so too. But why then do the Klingon carriers have BoPs? They have cloak, warp drive, and players can select the type of ship to fly.
While only the devs know for sure, if I were to propose a theory, it'd be the following:
The devs were looking for something to fill a "bomber" type role. A bigger craft, with more hps, packing some more torps and such, as opposed to the smaller, swarmy fighters. The BoP provided a canon ship that could fill the role. Small enough to be carried, with only a crew of 30 or so, big enough to fill the bomber role.

I like the idea that the name "Carrier" is a min-nomer, at least for the term we understand it. The Carriers are mobile bases. They can operate as repair and support platform in deep space for other ships. The ability to carry Bird of Preys represents this - these are the ships that regularly would return to such a platform for maintainance and resupply.
Of course it doesn't really make sense that we play these ships to do exploration missions or other missions. These ships would not usually do such missions.

This^. Its a carrier for lack of a simplier description. In reality its a mobile assualt platform used for large tactical operations well behind enemy lines.

But in reality, the carrier now is a mere shadow of it's former self.
