    This thing, usually found hanging off the necks of cows, hence the name. Though how common they are today is anyone's guess.

    they're referencing a Saturday Night Live skit about musicians needing to use more cowbell in their songs.

    A cowbell originally was a small bell tied to the collar of cattle to know where they were, as they ring as the animal walks. Makes it easier to round up the herd.
