Ok I down loaded the AC97 audio driver from Realtek website and guess what.....I am now playing and casting spells without much problem ...though slightly laggy. This worked for me!! good luck

ok very frustrating now, same problem (windows xp) after update I could stay in game several minutes before it just closed. I verified and then game closed after clicking start. I disabled sound, game stayed on until I cast a spell. ...I am not really very technical not sure what to try next!!
