Chances are you have run across come nodes but they were already farmed. So many low level crafters means lack of resources. I have a circuit I run to get logs with 7 - 8 nodes. I have managed maybe 1 - 2 logs every time I have run it today with a few times not even seeing a single node up.

I have seen at least one farming mats. Running straight lines to known nodes, sit at node for 2 seconds if no spawn, then run straight line to next node. I doubt it was a player today that spent 3 hours running the same circuit with the same exact route.

There are plenty of nodes around, but they are all heavily farmed by experienced people. A good place to find several is right outside Vanish at the starter area. There are 3 - 4 nodes right there, but be don't expect to see them up as I have already seen people standing on top of the nodes just waiting for respawns.

I love vague statements that serve no purpose. Cotton thread usually drops of skeleton type mobs. The low level skele archers and casters are a good source but heavily farmed right now.
