It's not complicated, you guys are making it complicated. Archer's are commonly used for ranged attack. I'm sure there are a lot of things different classes could be used for, depending on the build and the person playing the character.

I see nothing wrong with more clerics. Older players just need to be willing to take the time to teach someone how to be a good cleric.
