They make money from it by finding the mats(so they dont cost) and selling to players/auctioning them for more than mats are worth.

They cant be on and be gray unless there's a glitch. Maybe they're using a different char, maybe they arent on anymore, there are millions of reasons for them to not be shown as online. hope this helps
