No, you have to continue to feed your pet when it's hungry so it doesn't lose loyalty and its always satisfied/full.

Go axes because in the higher levels as in 70+ there are strong duel axes called TT (Twilight Temple) Axes are easier to grind also because of the more damage they do than polehammers.
