Killing mobs and picking drops = farming. Whatever you do with such drops doesn't matter, you still farmed.

saying they're equal is a lie. just compare them in terms of general equips: spec has at least 7-8 +12's, essence has ONE spec has 3 8juns, essence has one hell i think spec somehow has even more nirvana pieces (bought) and still they managed to get rolled (lolplumecity)
