So, do you have to use the relevant artisan and construct the items through them to level up the skill?

I know this is an old topic, but anyway... I'm nearing my first DQ, and I have quite a bit of money in items sitting in the bank from drops. I was hoping for honest opinions on whether it is more beneficial to sell the items needed for the DQ and skip the quests or to actually complete the DQs. Thank you!
