Packet loss, unreliable game connection, spike lag, ...

I've been getting highly random ping ingame - anywhere from 73 ms to 20k+ ms, at random moments, regardless of what is going on outside of the game (no concurrent downs, movies, etc.). There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the changes.
Out of curiosity, I opened up cmd and tried to ping pwi.perfectworld.com - the results for this came out perfectly fine. Pinging www.google.com gave similar, normal results.
Pinging pwigc2.perfectworld.com, which is associated with the Sanctuary server according to the PWI wiki, gives me 50-75% packet loss (2-3 out of 4 results being "request timed out").
Can any networking pros help me figure out if it's something on my end, or if it's something I can't do anything about? This is driving me nuts. I was able to play normally until pretty recently, I'd say within the last week or two. Before that, I'd get spike lag very infrequently.. now it's pretty much the norm, and it's frustrating as hell -.-
Thanks!

I know this is just my usual copy-paste response, but it has helpful information and will guide you along the right path to narrowing it down. Post your results and we can advise you on what to do.SylenThunder - Sanctuary wrote: »People hate me for posting this over and over, but damnit, there's just nothing better to say until you bother to provide more information. And seriously, there's a much better chance that the issue is either on your end, or somewhere between you and the servers. Unfortunately, that can't be determined until you give us something to work with.
Common reasons that you can't connect to the servers, experience disconnects, or just have lag in general...
1. You don't have the three .exe files for the client set to run as administrator.
2. You don't have the game directory set as an exception in your antivirus/security software. (Especially with Norton360 or MSE)
3. Your network adapter driver is out of date and needs to be refreshed.
4. Your local area network settings are improperly configured.
5. You have more than one firewall and don't realize it. (Common with some modems.)
6. Your firewall settings are too strict. (Very common withNorton360, ZoneAlarm, and Commodo firewall.)
7. Your router is configured improperly. (Or it's just a cheap router that can't handle the traffic you're putting on it.)
8. you have a bad network cable.
9. You're using a wireless network connection. (Which leads to another huge list of possible issues.)
10. You have a lot of traffic on your local network that is bogging your router/modem down.
11. There's a fault in your router.
12. There's a fault in your modem.
13, You have a bad phone cord plugged into your modem.
14. There's an issue with your house wiring.
15. There's an issue with your outside wiring.
16. A squirrel chewed on your phone/cable line at the pole and it's raining. (I have personally had this happen.)
17. A switch/router at the CO for your ISP is having an issue.
18. One of the many hubs between you and PWI is having an issue. (Most common)
19. There is heavy sunspot activity. (Has happened within the past two years)
20. There's a regional router outage. (This has happened more than a few times. More often occurs with trunk lines crossing large bodies of water)
That's just a few. Sometimes, the easiest fix is something like shutting down your Modem/Router/PC for three minutes and then bringing them back up. Unfortunately, all you've done is complain about having high latency. You haven't done anything that might lead someone who can help you, to be able to help you resolve the issue you're having.
The more details you give, the better I can narrow it down and tell you what the issue is.
At an absolute minimum I would need a copy of a traceroute to the server, and detailed information about how your local network is configured. In some cases, even a published Speccy log.
You don't have to be a tech wiz to provide any of this information either. You just need to be able to click the links I provided and to read and comprehend/follow instructions. I can understand you're frustrated, but sitting and complaining about a connection, without actually ever attempting to fix it, or provide information for those that can help you fix it, it probably one of the stupidest things you can do. If you feel offended by this statement, then you really need to take a closer look at reality.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
Thanks for the response. I don't mind canned answers as long as they're helpful I can totally understand the need for them, heh.

When I tried to do AnalyzeThis, it keeps telling me there is no internet connection, even though I am 100% online. Before you ask, I WAS running the program as admin (right click->Run as Admin).
As far as internet details goes, I'm on -supposedly- AT&T U-verse, according to them is fiber optics, but IDK >_> I'm currently using a wireless adapter card that plugs into my motherboard. Ethernet is not an option (router is halfway across the house), wireless adapter that plugs into the ethernet port on my computer has worse issues (even though it's supposed to be decent for gaming), USB adapters will result in disconnects as soon as I try to log into a game.
The current adapter I'm using has been great for the last few months, I don't know what's causing the issue now. I seem to have no other net-related problems, only in PWI do I get latency issues. =\
Let me know if any other info is needed.
Edit: I give up trying to post Speccy. I'm going to try to attach or link to the .txt instead -.-
Edit2: Link to Speccy. Sorry, Google Docs got rid of the nifty formatting =\ If you want me to upload elsewhere or know how to retain the formatting, please let me know. Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Latency on your network isn't bad, and looks about standard for a decent wireless connections. You're getting a whole lot of timeouts in the path though.
AT&T's DNS servers have a habit of sucking major donkey balls. If you run a router behind the modem, (which it looks like you might), set the DNS server addresses to use Google or FreeDNS. Better yet, use this program to find the fastest DNS server to connect to.
What I do, (Which is a necessity for me because the **** Motorola modem won't handle VPN), is follow this guide at step 6, and just use the modem as a bridge.
In any case, it looks like your biggest issue is the DNS servers. Sometimes just shutting the modem down for a few minutes will do it. (Needs to be at least 2 minutes to reset the port at the CO.)[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
Thanks Sylen
I'll try your suggestions during the weekend or so, I've done the shutting down the modem thing and it helps but only briefly. The problem returns ... so I'll take a look at that DNS server thingy =3
And you're right, I do run a router behind the modem - the modem/router hybrid U-Verse comes with supposedly sucks range-wise, so I'm using a Linksys (turned the router on the hybrid off) router.
Thanks again for the help, I'll post with my results when I get around to trying out your solutions =DTwo roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
