About those who "****" other accounts..

I'm curious, how exactly does PW investigate reports of "hacking"? I have a friend who was recently mostly away from the game for a week while house sitting. We knew she didn't have the game downloaded and when I, and other people who know her, saw her logging on and off we found it odd and let her know about it. She logged on as soon as she could and found someone had taken a few of her items. We had our suspicions that it was a certain person who had been stalking/harassing her in game a while back. When we saw him trying to sell one of those items, her mount, in World Chat it seemed like too much of a coincidence.
So when she reported the whole thing she mentioned that person. Now, I don't know how he got onto her account in the first place. But I know he has a lot of alts because when he decides to try bothering us again I always end up filling my blacklist with all the characters he PMs me/my friend from. So do they actually investigate in these situations? Check out different accounts with the same IP, accounts the items were traded to/from, etc? Just wondering if anyone knows if they actually do anything. Personally I think anyone who does something like this should be banned.

The GM's do investigate **** issues thoroughly (more than just IP and trade logs), but for security reasons I can't get into specifics of it all.0

Though everyone has a right to their opinion, there really isn't a need for that. At least not in my thread where it's obviously intended to be impolite.
Frankie, I understand that you can't give specifics on what you do to investigate hacking but I do wonder, in at least a hypothetical situation, if someone gets **** what are the odds that PW will give them their stuff back? I mean, does it ever happen? And if someone is proven to be responsible, do their accounts actually get banned? Is there any sort of general estimation of time you know of for the investigation before it's resolved?
If you can tell me these things, anyway. It's fine if you can't, it would just be nice to give my friend some good news. Everyone in our guild is working towards buying her replacement items for what was taken but I know she was pretty hurt over what she lost. They may just be silly pixels on a screen but one of the items came from a friend of her's who quit so there's at least the sentimentality there.0 -

Someone taken a few of her items = she shared accounts with someone who obviously couldn't be trusted. Next?0

Yes. I've known a few cases of people being " **** " and after the GM's investigated the situation got the items back and returned them.
Ofc it's all on a case by case basis so will depend on your friends personal hacking scenario.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

Personally, that's how I see it too. Yeah. She shared her account with a stalker. Obviously that must be how that went down. *Eyeroll.*Conavar - Heavens Tear wrote: »Yes. I've known a few cases of people being " **** " and after the GM's investigated the situation got the items back and returned them.

That's good to hear. I've never known anyone who had their account attacked like that(Unless you count those fools who PM me in game begging for things claiming to have been ****.) and most people were telling me it was certain she'd never get anything back. Obviously I don't mind helping her replace the items but I would prefer the only person in this situation to be punished being the thief.0 -

ive never been **** before in the almost 3 years ive played this game never gave anyone even a hint of what my password and username could be sense i dont trust anyone expecially family so im rlly pissedCollector of pet eggs, armor, weapons, fashion, and mountsb:chuckle0 -
I never thought i would be on this side of the fence, afterall I dont account share i dont go to 3rd party sites I dont even cheque my emails on my game computer. This is brand new comp as well, yet i get phone call from my sister asking "why are you not talking to me? why are you selling those sutras u farmed hard for?" I had no clue what she spoke of as I was not on FW or PWI & those are the ONLY two things i have on this comp. Other than FB (which my main FB is not associated to PWE at all).
I have NEVER been **** on any game i have ever played. I change my pw by habit every few months. I dont use game emails for anything other than the game and for the game facebook. I thought i took all the precautions.
Yet~here i am forcelogging some monkey off my acct lol. I ran scans. Called the company i just got comp from, & nothing was found on my end. I had sister run scan on her comps as i have used it, my mamas comp got scanned & she hasnt had the game on her comp since i last visited which was eons ago ^^ my live in BFS comp got scanned (he doesnt even know my login info) yet still no answers as to how my account was entered.
My username nor my pw is not one any would ever guess even if they knew me well. I dont have any info saved for easier logins always reenter all info combo the soft keyboard with the hard keyboard~~~ I am not comp saavy, so if I have missed soem security addition please someone share with me. I am about to travel and not feel comfortable leaving my account vulnerable. I did transfer to my sis n bro in law some my more expensve non bound items, that were just sitting on my toon... My famille has nothing to gain by "pretending to **** me" heheh as I have not played PWI regulary for over 6 months... Thus my Love up & down etc were already in their possession. There were DODs/utility charms warsong accessories etc in my stash yet the hacker chose to sell sutras n herbs? yah it not make alot of sense to me. Im the only one of 4 & my acct the most naked as i gave my sis n bro in law my items is the one to get ****? Everyone on that server knows they have had possesion of my "more expensive" items so why they wouldnt **** those acts, afterall they are active players belonging to a faction site that dont move all over the country changing computers/location every few months. Then they **** mine n dont sell mounts or wings or semi decent warsong accessories or other non bound gear?
Only one thing odd happen on my end.
I went to go online 8/28 late nite, ws waiting for patch to update but was sick so gave up before it completed.
8/29 everything looked fine it said i had latest version etc., but when went to hit the orange start it say error & soemthing about not being uptodate, so i tried few tiems no luck after about 10 minutes after "verify" tried again it took me login, but i had to go so never completed it.
Yet~a rl friend say they tried talk me that "my acct" was logged in for several hours 8/28 trying to sell items in WC.
I really cant think of anything i could have done to prevent or contribute to the hackers access. Is there a chance PWE got ****? i did submit a ticket. I merely ask is it a realistic possibility or just a thought of a pc noob?"I needed a password with eight characters so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." b:beatup~ Nick Helm0 -
There is no such thing as account hacking on PWE's servers. Are you people out of your damn wits ?
Your "****" friend "somehow" managed to let her login details slip, willingly or not. The easiest trick in the "fake book of hacking" (I do not in any way encourage this) is to find out a person's information from a faction website.
It is one of the easiest ways of getting a person's info, even if you're not the administrator of that faction website.
Another thing: the internet is a cesspool crawling with disgusting specimens suffering from teenage angst, trolling addiction, and most importantly, plain hateful attitudes. Hell, your best virtual friend could have "****" your account and sold your mount, just because in reality he's a ****ing evil *****.
You just CAN'T know people enough (on the Internet).
On the technical side of things, those servers are firewalled to the teeth. Sure, some stupid DDOS attacks can bring them down for a short while, as packet flooding always does the trick. But actually HACKING accounts ? You'd have to own administrative rights over PWE's main server security protocols. Your children will enjoy retirement before any nerd covered in nachos in his mom's basement wreaks havoc upon PWE's servers. Get real, folks.
Those security measures are there for a reason:
-change your password frequently;
-use multiple characters in your password;
-for God's sake, do not use that password for any other accounts you may posess.
But I digress...lolhacks[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

The odds of random person in game "hacking" their account by people's definition today which is "sharing account info" is extremely high. I'll go with the odds here. Dude might be a creep and a stalker and a puppy kicker or whatever but some people have to burn their hands on the hot stove to learn not to touch it. Some of us don't. Helping them in this case is them learning the hard way to keep their account secure and not to share it. Simple as that. People are constantly warned to stay away from sharing their account info but they do it anyways. Sucks for them when they get what's coming.

Everything has its beginnings, but it doesn't start at one. It starts long before that... The world is born From zero. The moment zero becomes one is the moment the world springs to life. One becomes 2. 2 becomes 10. 10 becomes 100. taking it all back to one solves nothing. so long as zero remains... One.. Will eventually grow to 100 again.0 -

99.999% of the time it happens to idiots. Hmm, come to think of it I'm not shocked you were ****.0 -
Why do ppl do such stupid things like these? (rhetorical question)
Easiest way is to fins ppl login info was presented earlier but there are many ways to do it and many ppl do put passwords like birthdays, cat/dog name, easy stuffs u can remember. The hacking can be made not only at PWI servers it can be done at your PC witch is much easier.
Had a CISCO course and they shewed us how to find out ppl google address and pass and other cool stuffs if we are in the same network as they are (can't remember the exact method).
There will always be ppl like these in every MMO or game and even in RL so all plss be careful and hope all those who to these kind of things to have a little worm place waiting for them i MMO's Hell.0 -

You'll find more idiots in the US government than in a Alabama jailhouse.
Hell, a teenager **** a Pentagon server and messed around with it's communication systems. Just goes to show what the american government spends on security protocols.

As a side note, you probably guessed by now that PWE has way better security for it's customers (F2P or not) than the Pentagon ever will. I wish I could say the same for PWE's management.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Ive had my account **** on WoW before, so why would I think that PWI accounts can't be ****. I'm very computer savvy and have taken several courses on Internet safety, Cisco, Web Design and Database Programming, along with playing about 6-7 different MMO's and having been around computers since I was 10 or so. I change my password once a week and I cycle between four non similar or related passwords that are each 6 characters or more long consisting of Alpha-Numeric combinations. I also do not keep those written down or stored anywhere. Yet I was still **** and luckily Blizzard has a good system set up because as soon as they noticed the suspicious activity they banned my account and sent me an email alerting me of the situation. I simply had to call to retrieve my account, I was told by their account restoration department that the hacking of an account is a very common and very easy thing to do. It does not make you a noob or an idiot if your account is compromised, and it does mean that they HAD to have GIVEN their account info for this to happen they could have made one easy mistake. Why is everyone so quick to judge and point the blame finger, also calling people stupid on a public forum. It only makes you look more ridiculous and pompous. You win nothing; no respect, no money, rarely only the other people that also make themselves look this way laugh at what you have to say. OP didn't ask for your opinion as to how her friend was "****". She asked for peoples opinion on how well the GMs' handle the situation.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0

ahhahahaha i like ur reply b:chuckle at same time u just said a teenager was capable of causing that chaos... n with all these "new reminders" all over PWE about PW et security then all sudden i get **** when I am positive I have not gone or done anything that would set me up for that? I still have to say hmmmmm..... If not **** did a disgruntled/ or non alert new employee make a mistake or sell info? ahahha as u see Im not a very trusting person sooo the chances of me "accidentally leaking or giving my info" to unsavory source, is on even running with possiblity that PWE had a security breach or knows something we dont know... Although unlikely the possibility is there.
as stated above i submitted a ticket, I hoep when they investigate & see the source that although they cannot disclose the "hows, who's or wheres... That they can tell me a security tip that will apply to my individual situation. lol I want to cheque my fw accts n other pwi accts, but seriously paranoid to enter any info incase somehow the company or scans i made missed soemthing & its on my side ahahahahha so my toon is standing in town as i contemplate what to do... hoping soem gm will saunter over my ticket n freeze my account til its all sorted or w.e they do in these situations."I needed a password with eight characters so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." b:beatup~ Nick Helm0 -
I was **** on the last game I played; and I feel very sorry for anyone that it has ever happened to. The parent company (Of the game I played) insists that you link any of your game accounts to their account; and they got **** by Real Money Traders. They wouldn't admit it, but it was discussed on their various forums for months, by people whose accounts were getting ****.
It happened to me over the beginning of the game's Christmas Holiday Event. My whole guild & I watched in horror as my different toons ran around in our guild hall; hopping in & out, passing all my stuff off to other people. I didn't pay any money for those pixels (beyond the price of the game itself); but I had a very rare mini pet that was worth a lot of money that probably got sold for about $300.00 on Ebay. Plus some other expensive things. My armor; the runes on my armor, my dyes & my ectos (they were worth a lot of coin in game; kind of like uncanny crystals); and I was working on a title in the game that was very hard to get and involved getting your character to level 20 in the learning area. (A lot more difficult than it sounds). And they "brought it over" to get to the dyes and stuff on the toon. Which meant I had to delete the toon and start all over if I ever wanted that title. And umpteen million hours worth of my time. And I never got anything back but my account. So, when they refused to let me unlink my game account from the master account; I quit that game and that's when I found PWI.

Despite its laughable management, PWE kept a clean slate on the account hacking issues. Come on, people. Examine the situation:
-How many accounts have been **** in Perfect World compared to all other MMO's ? (especially a big one by corporate giant Square Enix);
-How many of those account hacking reports are actually true ?
-How much moolah do you think a company like PWE invests in its security ? (considering it's a multi-million dollar business)

To question if there has been a change or lapse in security resulting in some players info getting out is plausible.
