Every post/thread that's breaking the forum's rules will be closed/edited. No need to QQ about it.

I'd solo to head room for Grim if he ever wanted to FC. I think he's too busy closing threads on DW forums to level his archer, though.0

The lamest example I can think of is this:
1*0 = 2*0 (certainly true since both sides are equal to zero)
dividing both sides by zero results in 1*0/0 = 2*0/0
which incorrectly yields 1 = 2
The quintessential example is this one:
Say some number a = b
now multiply both sides by a --> a^2 = a*b
now subtract both sides by b^2 --> a^2 - b^2 = a*b - b^2
now factor both sides --> (a + b)(a - b) = b(a - b)
(So far all that we've done is legitimate, if pointless. Here's where things go bad...)
divide out (a - b) --> (a + b) = b
remembering that a = b, replace all a's (or b's) with the other variable --> a + a = a
simplifying --> 2a = a
in other words: 2 = 1

When I took general proofs courses, they always had a component where we had to "spot the error" in fallacious proofs. The 1=2 one is always an easy one, but my favorite is this one:
Given some number x, that is between 0 and 1 --> 0 < x < 1
Now take the natural log of both sides (and remembering that ln is valid for all x > 0 and preserves the given order) --> ln x < ln 1
Now ln 1 = 0 so --> ln x < 0
Dividing by ln x on both sides results in 1 < 0

Way to go, I had issues with that one the first timeTeppeii - Dreamweaver wrote: »Tell me more of these, I feed off this sort of thing
Sure... let's see...
There are a few calculus ones to "proove" that 1 = 0, but I don't know if you have any background in calculus. A fast one that I can pull off the interwebs is this one that messes with the associative property and infinite series:
Given a convergent series --> 0 = 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 +...
Remember that 0 = 1 - 1, so substitute that --> 0 = (1 - 1) + (1 - 1) + (1 - 1) +...
Now we use the associative property --> 0 = 1 + (-1 + 1) + (-1 + 1) + (-1 + 1) +...
Keeping in mind that 0 = 1 - 1 (and, of course, -1 + 1) --> 0 = 1 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 +...
This leaves us with the very incorrect statement that 0 = 1
As for more fun and creative ones, I haven't the time to find them right now.Getter_Robo - Dreamweaver wrote: »b:angry DIE MATH
