So, what do you think makes for an apropiate response?

With self criticism being largely missing from the comunity, despite this being the moment when it would be required the most, i would like to make a comment on the absolute inability of some posters to hold civilized discourse.
Let's get it out of the way, yes, i'm well known to be an aggressive poster. But believe it or not i'm NEVER hostile if unprovoked. Those few situations in which i may have gratuitously offended someone i have apologized for, and if you feel otherwise do make your case in a calm, respectful manner, and you may be surprised i may actually come to agree with you. Now, it really does say something about ourselves as a comunity that it is near imposible to try and hold dialogue with some of the forum's regulars without getting a few insults in return. I won't go into specifics but everyone who's familiar with the forums should be well aware exactly who i'm talking about. It doesn't matter how respectful or neutral you may try to be, as it almost seems the very concept of you disagreeing with them is an insult in itself. And they bully their way to "winning" debates which actually is itself a worst form of censorship than anything the forum staff has been able to come up with. This has been ongoing for quite some time now, and i do believe this is very harmful since it silences voices which otherwise could have made for great contributions. It negatively impacts the enviroment for us all. It drives people away from the forums, and makes us all look like a bunch of bitter sad little jerks.
What makes for an apropiate response when you are insulted? Should you be mature enough so as to walk away? Stand firmly and peacefully respond to aggression? Someone insulted me in what i believe to have been a low and unacceptable manner today. I responded expressing my opinion, but without resorting to insult. The result? The thread got locked after flaming in which i was not involved, and the OP felt the need to add injury to insult, resorting to calling me names even after she mistook what was in fact a sarcastic response for a conciliatory comment.
So i leave it to you all to reflect upon this and decide what to do about it. Because the decission has always been in our hands. Because WE are also responsable for this game's decline and it has now become imposible to have a debate about anything without it turning to flames. What do people consider a "good" thread in here? One in which all posters basically agree with the OP. It's either suck up to the forum's heavyweights or get the hell out. No room for a civilized discussion which, may i remind you all, is actually the very purpose the forums were made for.
I mean this as a legitimate argument but know better than to expect my thread to be considered anything other than flamebait, and in the end to be either trolled or ignored. And it's ok, becasue i do hope at the very least someone out there will take comfort in knowing that at least some of us acknowledge our mistakes and would like to change things for the better.

I won't address your post point by point, but what I have found helps is to brush off the personal insults. In reality, I doubt they are truly meant, as it is quite easy to insult a wall of text and I do believe *most* [maybe not all] of these people would not say the same thing to someone's face. When you realise that you will never ever see or deal with these people except in this limited capacity, it gets easier to just ignore the off base comments.
I do know the thread you're talking about though I missed the argument. Regardless, it is far easier to misunderstand writing than it is speech. People who are aggressive tend to cause problems just by virtue of misunderstanding, and no one seems to want to try to correct this.0 -

You are so easy to troll, MANray, that it hurts.
The appropriate thing to do in my thread would have been to realise you were getting trolled, and walk away, because it was
a) somebody trolling you
b) not relevant to the actual thread, thus you were dragging it off topic
Then when you made a post and claimed it was on topic, it still wasn't on topic because you were still crying and being butthurt about how Waffle should not be a mod. My topic wasn't about how Waffle should be a mod. It wasn't about "Which member of this community is such an ******* you think they shouldn't be a mod" and it wasn't about "Lets argue about who should be moderator here!"
You are not faultless, don't pretend you are. That entire post? I stopped reading when you tried to make yourself out to be this perfect little angel who didn't derail a thread off topic and get it closed like a little dickweed because you had to argue with somebody in that thread rather then PM them.
You didn't even do what you did right now and go make your own thread about how Waffle shouldn't be mod.
Go inflate your ego more, this entire post is BS based from what I've seen from you today. You were not faultless, you derailed a topic where you shouldn't have, you argued where you shouldn't have, and when I called you out on being a ****nut for being immature and arguing WHERE YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE you were all "Oh I agree I know why you're so disappointed" even though you were one of the reasons I was so disappointed.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
Simple fact is, that you are right, not many people on this forum seem to be open to the idea that their opinion is wrong. Argo it will be hard for anyone to respond to anything with a half way respectful comment RELEVANT to the original post.
It's not easy changing people's minds, am not saying they should change their mind, but the way some people handle themselves on this forum, is quite sad, and leaves me just throwing my hands up in the air, and just say **** it all, I am not messing with it anymore. =x I lost the will to "fight/calm" people down long ago, when I stepped down as a leader/forum mod in another game.
As you said you can either walk away and ignore the post, you can reply in kind and possibly get in trouble for it, or possibly ponder on the thought why they would even reply like they did to you trying to diffuse a situation. It really depends on the person, some people can easily calm people down by replying, whereas others will just stay out of it, or just make things worse.*Ah, Mistakes are so easily made. ~ laura resnick

Cute as always, you even made sure to include those that were obviously typos. Como bien sabes, el Ingles no es mi idioma nativo. I may be easy to troll but your inability to read between the lines is so amusing it makes it well worth it. I was obviously criticizing your thread in the OP and it really should have been all but obvious to you it was the answer that i gave you that i meant as sarcasm. Apparently even having been told you're unable to tell the difference, on the other hand, it was pretty obvious to me i was being the target of your post. And if you're going to be all butthurt and petty about your thread let me say it again, it wasn't actually a discussion...
As for my ego and all that it's really sad it is you who doesn't realize you're doing far worse as you actually do mean to pick up a fight. The irony being that you brought insults to a thread that is meant to discuss the harm they have done. Every single thing you've said about me applies to yourself also, and i'm sure the comunity members that look down upon both of us as pathetic trolls will probably agree. I'll see you in hell baby-- b:sin

Believe it or not, you are not nice and mellow when not provoked. You're actually quite condescending and SNOBBY. This makes you a target for some trolls, I must admit. Not to mention your wannabee college format text makes many a person NOT want to read your wall of crud. Normally it's manageable, but if anyone so much as corrects your English, you fluff up your feathers and type in long convoluted sentences that I'd expect to find in Ivanhoe. Get it? You are NOT always respectful and neutral. You are biased, and you hide it (not very well) behind the pretense of formal language.
As for the forum "regulars," I'm sure you have a couple people in mind. I've had a spat with some of them, but we otherwise get along when our topic of disagreement is not involved. This is something you seem to have trouble understanding. In fact the first time we've ever argued, a completely innocent person came and posted, and you immediately started attacking him with accusations of various sorts, which apparently originated from a thread I didn't even know about. Grudge much?
As for how I respond to insult...I just reply to it. If it's some accusation I can dispute it, and if it's just namecalling, I ignore it. In fact, I had to actually think about that one because I so RARELY feel insulted here. Yea, there will always be dumbasses who have to resort to name calling and insinuating that you might possibly not be straight or heck imply that you could be sleeping with certain people. All I do is point out their stupidity in that. If they insult my nationality or w/e, which seems to be your problem, then if it was actually an insult more people would chime in and bash the racist idiot. If no one feels the need to JUMP to my defense, then I probably took it too personally.
Lastly there is the problem of what is actually considered an insult. If you use the forums and post regularly, you will be called stupid at some point. No matter how great your posts are, no matter how logical your opinion is, no matter how many times you spellcheck, you will be called an idiot. At some point. It's inevitable. From whan I see in your ragings, you take being called stupid very personally, and that is your greatest downfall. You. Are. Just. Too. Defensive.0 -

Oh yea, I'm sure you didn't mean "cute" in any demeaning way either, Mister Perfect Angel. Completely respectful of course.
And where's ChaoticShelly? Posting in foreign languages is bannable. Though what were you trying to prove? That I can't correct a language that I don't speak? Oh great, that's new. No wonder I couldn't see that typo in Swahili. Make more dumb points please.0 -

I knew you were talking about and trying to (not so) subtly attack it.
Ironically, this is after you come along and had agreed with me in that thread. Also, if you read, before you started getting butthurt about Waffle's alt posting about how he should be an alt, there was discussion. People discussed good points of my post, and bad points. Maybe you didn't see it, so here, let me quote them for you.At this point though, I can't think of anyone that's known on the forums that would fit the bill. The majority of the intelligent and well-known people on this forum (that would make good moderators) have... well... made too many waves. Can't blame them, because they're just being logical, but I can't see the people that I'm thinking of ever being asked to moderate.
Somebody here pointed out that regardless of what method was used to pick mods, nobody would be very happy with some of them because we don't have enough people left who fit the bill.
I.E. something was discussed.
How about this one:Lurking gives an idea of peoples text style and character. Don't tell me you never read a thread or a post and think something about the poster and build a picture of things or themselves? (See next point). Lurking is using observational skills. That's applicable in my book and surely would be recognised by someone with forum board moderating experience.
I won't go into arrogance issues, it's all too easy to become a flame subject. All I'll say is that it is all too easy to unintentionally write words which give the wrong impression.
Here, somebody discussed the idea of arrogance being subjective and thus, this means that people have split opinions on the new mods. It also discussed whether lurking did or did not give somebody adequate ability to know the community and moderate it, as such.
OR MAYBE THIS:this, in my opinion, can have positive and negative repricussions. as we have seen before, some people can end up becoming favorites with that administrator and end up recieving information firsthand before they are supposed to. of course this can lead to a well maintained fan site; it's also a no-no in a large number of gaming corporations contractual obligations. revealing any kind of information to players before an official statement has always been a big company no go policy.
though, on a positive light, this can also lead to a connection with players. connection can aways lead to trust and respect, thus more of a chance they will follow the rules in a peaceful manner. dual edge sword that works both ways.
Here somebody discussed the idea of a moderator who interacted and mingled with the community and acted like a forum member when they weren't busy being a moderator.
You just said my thread had no discussion.

That was not a real response, and neither is yours. This is not dialogue, just you writing a short essay on why you don't like me. Let me try to get a couple of points across.
1. I never meant to imply that i was in any way better than you as a poster. We are both trolls that make life unpleasant for most of the people around here. I obviously did try to explain myself in the OP and do believe what i said to be true, but what i didn't do was in any way imply i'm any less of a nuissance. No doubt you would also make a great contributor to the forums if you could get over yourself and changed your attitude some, which is precisely the point i was trying to make. I find it ironic that you would try to characterize me as someone who holds a grudge, which leads me to point 2.
2. That first time we argued i was actually trying to walk out of it. Not because i had been proven wrong, but because it was also the first time Waffle showed his true colors. Now i don't care so much about people making up stories about me or describing what they would like to do to my skull, i obviously remember who posters are, but don't take insults to heart. Hate however is a very different issue, it was the very first time i had ever encountered such a thing in PWI forums and while obviously i can't discuss it (since this suposedly involved disciplinary action) i was otherwise ocupied and not in the mood to humor you and Michael. I tried to get out of it, i was polite and stopped insulting you despite provocations, i think i even apologized. And what did it get me? You thought my writing formally was pedantic, and have made such a point of it probably even lowbies just looking for quest guides are now informed. I don't care about what kind of silliy prejudice you may hold against college educated people, but there is a side to you that's small and petty. I'd rather take all the opinions you wrote about me as truth than be told that, but is obvious we are very different people.
And FYI, no one gets banned for writing a couple of sentences in Spanish, especially if not recognizable profanity is used. At the most this merits a reminder of forum rules from a moderator. Your reaction to it was so hysterical, and especially funny given the context of what i actually wrote, that i'm content to let it stand.Airyll - Dreamweaver wrote: »You just said my thread had no discussion.

Let me get this straight, i accuse you of being petty and butthurt about your thread and you decide to prove me wrong, how? By digging through it trying to prove it actually was a discussion? Even you have to see some irony in that. I obviously used the term in the sense that implies debate not conversation. This should have been made pretty clear in my original post when i argued about threads in which people all agreed with the OP. What exactly did you think you were proving quoting all that? And yes, dear, i did agree with your post because it spoke the truth and it was well written. There's no shame in that. But after my initial, and i believe understandable, reaction to this person, i actually stopped responding while the guy you honour as a "hero" on your sig (a "hero" i may add that apparently has it in for Jews and Mexicans) cackled and baited me. Oh, but maybe you missed that because Shelly went crazy with the delete button. And maybe you missed the further pages of trolling and flaming in which i was no longer involved, nor anything i had brought up discussed. But is my fault isn't it? Because i defended myself in no stronger terms than i've seen you do in other threads. Isn't that hipocrisy? I'm sorry your thread got closed, but honey, look up rule 95. This is the internet.0 -

Don't waste your time pulling arguments out your ***, mocking a thread and saying how it wasn't a discussion, then when I offer you all the evidence to prove it was quite a placid discussion before you turned stupid and rose to the bait, you say "OH WAIT LOL BUT IT'S NOT DISCUSSION IT'S TOTALLY DEBATE"
Go read a dictionary. You might learn what discussion and debate means and you might also learn to spell, ijs.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
MANray_ go pull your head out of the clouds and get a clue.
When people have a legitimate argument they voice it. The medium for that is these forums. When it goes unanswered people get mad.
Get your walls of text out of here, nobody wants your bs arguments, they have no basis to begin with. The walls of text just give people headaches.
Also, you're worse than most of the people that are mad. Know why? YOU REFUSE to see both sides of the argument.

P.S. Using huge words doesn't make you look smart. It shows your condescending and snobbish attitude. I'm going to law school, but do you see me doing that? No, cause I know how to actually relate to other human beings.0 -

Yes, because everyone wants to go watch some crappy video and hear even worse music. Nobody is going to take the time to open that or listen to it, because its not funny or illuminating. It is just a pathetic attempt to make yourself feel righteous in your own mind.
A little lesson: Be concise and straight to the point. Refute the other person's argument and be done. Youtube video's don't do this.
Oh, and making me out to be a caveman brute of a person just makes you seem so wonderful, doesn't it?0 -
This is probably going to fall upon dead ears. But if you truly want to change how discussion works, start by examining your own posts and try to figure out what you can do to change them so you do not incite such responses. It's not all your fault but we can always improve ourselves. If everyone made that sort of effort we would not be having this conversation...Otherwise I totally don't understand the point of this thread. Of course if you still want arguments feel free to proceed.0

And you have the right to say what is a response how? Because you're better than us? That's what I thought. And the fact that you accused us of writing a "short essay" is hilariously ironic indeed. I don't DISLIKE anyone on these forums. I certainly do say stupid when I see stupid post. It's not really my problem if the same people make those stupid posts.
1. I never meant to imply that i was in any way better than you as a poster. So you have the right to dictate what is a proper response and what isn't how? Uh huh. And what was the purpose of saying you are respectful and neutral if you're not trying to contrast yourself with something? Right. We are both trolls that make life unpleasant for most of the people around here. No, not really. I only troll when the opportunity comes. I'm nice in general. Well, maybe a bit DRY and sardonic. I obviously did try to explain myself in the OP and do believe what i said to be true, but what i didn't do was in any way imply i'm any less of a nuisance. Yes, you tried to explain your troll-ness, just like I explained mine. I just didn't dedicate a whole thread to it. No doubt you would also make a great contributor to the forums if you could get over yourself and changed your attitude some, which is precisely the point i was trying to make. I like my attitude o_O Not my problem if you don't. Arrogant but that's the way it is.I find it ironic that you would try to characterize me as someone who holds a grudge, which leads me to point 2. 2. That first time we argued i was actually trying to walk out of it. Not because i had been proven wrong, but because it was also the first time Waffle showed his true colors. The first time we argued did not involve Waffle. I don't think we ever argued over Waffle. *rolls eyes*Now i don't care so much about people making up stories about me or describing what they would like to do to my skull, i obviously remember who posters are, but don't take insults to heart. No? You didn't rage when people thought your posts were stupid? It's well known that calling you any variation of stupid and ignorant can incite walls of text from you. Hence why everyone knows you're easy to troll. Hate however is a very different issue, it was the very first time i had ever encountered such a thing in PWI forums and while obviously i can't discuss it (since this suposedly involved disciplinary action) i was otherwise occupied and not in the mood to humor you and Michael. You actually humor me just be grinding out these heartfelt walls of text. I tried to get out of it, i was polite and stopped insulting you despite provocations, i think i even apologized. You need to stop with these I'm an angel and everyone is abusing me story. People can read. You are as guilty as anyone else. And you started this topic, so you stand there and tell everyone you don't provoke any flames. And what did it get me? You thought my writing formally was pedantic, and have made such a point of it probably even lowbies just looking for quest guides are now informed. Hai noobs I'm your friendly neighborhood troll *waves* I don't care about what kind of silliy (no i) prejudice you may hold against college educated people, but there is a side to you that's small and petty. I have no such prejudices. I go to UCLA with an English minor. My problem is you make a mockery of my studies.
Your reaction to it was so hysterical, and especially funny given the context of what i actually wrote, that i'm content to let it stand.
You obviously missed what's been happening on the forums if you think I was trying to get you banned for that. And like I said, I don't speak Spanish. Like hell I would know if you're insulting me, telling me the weather, or saying earth is flat, it's all the same to me. If you think my sarcasm is hysterical then thank you, it was funnier than I thought. If you thought I was serious then you're an idiot.
tldr; This proves my point.MANray_ - Sanctuary wrote: »http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0wHQYY-etQ&feature=related
b:cold People like to say i post random videos, but they actually never listen to the lyrics...
Edit; "I r Basingeth, me smash Manray. Walls of text confooze me."
Tell me this last "edit" of yours is not demeaning, provoking, or insulting. Tell me this is a respectful response, or an an excuse of a conversation with someone who has expressed disagreement with you.
Edit: No, personally, I've never watched a single one of your links.0 -

Well man, you must admit you opened the door to that and worse by mentioning you were in law school. b:laugh
And i wouldn't go so far as to call Live crappy music, it certainly wasn't amongst the best the 1990's have to offer, but it is some of the more tolerable hippy music...
@Airyll; Look, i certainly know what i meant in what i wrote, i thought context should have made it clear but perhaps i was wrong, after all the word discussion is used almost exclusively for debate in Spanish. Let's say you're right and that you have proven your thread to have been a rather placid "discussion". It's obviously unimportant to the point i was trying to make and i'm tired of conversations being derailed by debate over unimportant minutiae. I was being critical of influential posters taking control of threads, that's as plain as i can make it. What do you want? I told you i'm not to blame for the demise of your precious thread, do you want to rage some more about it? Have you stopped to consider how stubborn and stupid it makes you look? You came in my thread with no other purpose than to flame and insult me. You called me out on a lot of things but haven't actually been on topic at all. is this about getting even? Will you be satisfied once this gets locked?
Or is this personal? Because if it is then honey, i'm not your biggest problem. Did you actually read what i wrote? Granted it may not be as grandiose and illuminating as the post you made for your thread, but there is a legitimate point here to discuss (or whatever you may want to call it) and i didn't get on your thread with the intention of either derailing it or having it locked. That you feel no outrage or indignation towards Waffle actually concerns me more. That you don't realize that what you're doing is childish and actually much worse than whatever i may have inadvertedly done reflects poorly on you. And that you don't care to actually make a concise and reasonable point is precisely the same issue that we saw wreck the forums in the past few days. Get over yourself and ask yourself what is the purpose of your posting here.0 -

you really are one stuck up person huh?
"hai, i got friends. my friends will stick behind me 100% and agree with me over you. since my friends agree with me and not you, you fail and so does all of your points"
btw, you came into this thread to flame bait manray just because you are butthurt over your own thread getting locked. you are no different from the people that flamed your own thread.

You say tldr but then you go ahead and analyzed what he said bit by bit and even pointed out spelling errors. That's just funny. b:laugh[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Ok, i've probably told you this before, but learn to post. When you just write in my own quote it makes it a nightmare for me to try to respond punctually. And your anal obsession with my spelling is just annoying, i write fast, i also make typos. If you really are against people making a "mockery" of your studies you chose the wrong forum, this is for gaming dear. i would make sure to correct and spellcheck what i write if it was a discussion on literature, and that you don't seem to get it through your head i'm not a native speaker is beyond pathetic. But then, that is your stated purpose isn't it? Because i take it whenever the oportunity presents itself means whenever i dare post something, since almost your trolling me has crossed the line into harrassment. And cool kids are suposed to annoy others right? But we strongly believe we don't have an attitude problem, do we? Well the really shameful thing is that your access to a dictionary is about all you've gotten from your studies, since i can plainly write that i consider myself as much of a nuissance to others and that i admit to being a part of the problem and you'll somehow take that to mean i look down upon you and i'm self agrandizing arrogant ****. Which i am, but not for any of the reasons that you have provided.
Think this thread is about me? You consider me such an interesting subject that you will post for the purpose that i hear your opinions on what i do? Come on, i certainly am a narcissist so this is just gravy for me. b:sin
But then, the fact is i'm the only one in this thread who has admitted to flaws and mistakes, the only one that recognizes a need for change and apparently the only one who has demonstrated anything resembling a sense of humor. I'll ask you the same thing i asked Airyll, why are you posting here? Do you log on to forums hoping i have made some posts with lots of typos and spelling mistakes that you can correct? Does your little heart flutter everytime you see i've responded to one of your posts? One could almost think you've discussed me with others judging by the content of your last response...
I would tell you to get a life but i don't want to be too cruel. I'm probably all you've got... b:kiss0 -

No. Obviously i can't take a hint so spell it plainly to me. What is your point Airyll? I addressed you in as straightforward a manner as i know how and still couldn't get anything in the way of an answer from you. This is my thread, you know, if you want to know why i'm posting here just read the OP.0 -

Wow, you're an idiot too. Obviously she was referring to her wall of response, then posting a tl;dr showing her next quote proved exactly what she was saying in the first place.

she hates/is annoyed that he posts walls of texts, but she also posts walls of texts. airyll also posts walls of texts, and coincidentally she is in every single thread airyll is in. hypocritical, isnt it.0 -
Your account name is "trollface", the only thing I desire to tell you is that you are being ignored.MANray_ - Sanctuary wrote: »Ok, i've probably told you this before, but learn to post.
Normally I would agree with you, and I'm the one responsible for you even saying that from chastising you from doing the exact same thing to me, however she would have needed to make 14 separate quotes to you.MANray_ - Sanctuary wrote: »@Airyll; Look, i certainly know what i meant in what i wrote,
Yes, perhaps you do. Most other people don't. English isn't your primary language and trying to use too much of your vocabulary actually suicides your initial point and makes it look like you're posting a wall of scrambled nonsense. As I've said and another poster has said in this thread, learn to be concise and direct. It will actually make you seem more intelligent.0 -

So she was refering to her own wall of response? wouldn't that have been mine? So that she wrote as much as i did proves, what?
Really, who are you? b:puzzled0
