If it was a good business model, don't you think every game out there would be doing it already?
In the States, current anti-discrimination laws expressively forbid non-explicit media content from this type of lawsuits. It's utterly impossible unless decades of legislation were rolled back in a big way. Most European countries are probably liberal enough that this won't happen, although I'm not entirely sure. Lets face it, overwhelming majority of players are from US and Europe, even though PWI will like get banned in countries like Iran, I doubt it will make a difference on the bottom line. It'll do far more good than harm.0 -

Most of southern europe is ultra-conservative, with a large portion conservative among the rest. (in fact, only 5 countries in all of europe recognize same-sex marriages). In the US, DOMA (defense of marriage act, passed by former Pres Clinton), allows each state to define what is marriage, and 46 states have made it legal to marry only people of the oposite sex. The Federal government defines marriage as a union between a male and a female as well.
This means you cannot descriminate against **** people, but you do not have to let them get married.(you would think that would be descrimination, right, however it has been upheld by the supreme court). Only legal activities are covered by the anti-descrimination laws, if same-sex marriage is not legal, than it is not covered.
The difference on the bottom line is very hard to measure, since it could go either way... However, if last round of elections is an indication, it would not be good (heck even in California the voters changed the law to make it only legal for people of oposing sexes to get married, and California is as liberal as it gets in the US).
Also, do not underestimate how many middle-easterners play on-line games....
If this makes such a good business sense, why don't all the games out there promote same-sex marriages? I am sure if they could make more money out of it than they could loose from allowing it, they would be all over it.Too often we loose sight of life's simple pleasures. I know, as a fact, that legally, it's absolutely waterproof in the US. Conservatives have lobbied for years against TV shows, and more recently, games, with no success. They merely served as free publicity and increase ratings.
Some of the most successful and profitable games in history, such as The Sims franchise, has same sex marriage as part of marriage system. It's became accepted as the rule instead of exception in recent years.
However, f2p mmorpgs are somewhat behind the curve. Only a handful has any kind of marriage system, and so far, only [removed] incorporates same sex marriage, and it's not nearly as well know as Perfect World. It's still not too late, PWI can still jump onto the head of the train and grab attention. It may determine the difference between dying out in a few years, or staying viable for being remembered as a ground breaker.0 -

Regarding the other points. They are very good ones. Maybe it was easier for them to try it out, since they publish 12 other games as well, and if this one game them troubles, it would not be a big deal to drop it. Although, to be honest, they were one of the last places I would had expect to see it, since they also publish some very popular PG games
I totaly forgot about that game.. I play some of their other ones, mostly the FPS ones, and I forgot that they had introduced that back in February or March.Too often we loose sight of life's simple pleasures. This is not an indication of what is right or wrong, it is just a reflection on society and business sense. Why go against the majority norm when you want as many people as possible to play?
I see your point now. Prehaps one day the majority will evolve to a point which will allow societys to open their minds enough to allow things like same sex marriges in a game? I shall wait for that day, the day that never comes. You'll never see me running away, I will stay to be

this just ain't gonna happen. it's too much of a risk. didn't read the other posts so i ain't sure if this has been bought up. but the gaming indutry is already under fire from things like violence, and what not. putting same sex marriages is a risk that NO mmo will take. could you imagine what protesters would do? really it's more problems than it's worth. a testament to this is simply how it isn't implemented. this idea could being tons of cash in but it's not here. why? becos there is a potential risk that protesters (like a certain bared Florida lawyer xD) would somehow interfere with the game. this COULD cause a domino effect should it be put on the media. when parents see it, and realize their kids are playing said game what you think will happen? they will forbid the them from playing and ALOT of pw players are under 17 and most likely living with their parents.
perhaps one day same sex marriages in mmos will be common. but it's not now people are to narrow minded simple as that. think logically and not emotionally you'll understand that from a bessness stand point it's too risky0 -

Baby steps???
Before they even consider this, maybe allow same sex carrying?
It is such a pain that I can't carry a female lowbie friend who can't fly yet. If they don't change that there is no way in hell that they are going the next step with the marriage thing.0 -
Is everyone ready to hear "archer, do you take this barbarian to be your lawful wedded... ...dude? I now pronunce you incorrectly!."

I'll just wait to join PW until it does happen. I've haunted the boards for awhile, then registered, but never really gotten active in PW for a variety of reasons. Part of it is the apparent intolerance and hatred expressed by the game company.
Interesting attitude I suppose since I'm hetero but I don't have a lot of patience for intolerance (besides my own intolerance for intolerance of course!) or antiquated morals that are perpetuated by ancient male dominated religions.
If a Perfect World includes such superstition, hatred, and prejudice then it isn't very perfect. I'll not devote my time or money in support of such a thing.IceJazmin - Heavens Tear wrote: »It will come... it is not a if, it is a when, just need to be patient and not let little setbacks put you down.0 -
the ones who are hell bent on getting this idea past seem to have a total lack of understanding. no one is hating or intlorent to the idea. it's all about business and the fact that this is a game and games are used to escape real life issues.
picture this: you own a store that sells plants, then you decide "hey weed would sell pretty good." you put it up for sale. what do you think will happen? everyone would stop going there. business wise NO plant store would sell plants like that becos it's more trouble than it's worth (granted those plants are full blown illegal but i trust you have the idea). the same thing can be said here with this idea.
some would say if your trying to escape real life issues, then y marriages are in the game in the first place? the answer is simple. marriages are not a real life issue, same sex marriges on the other hand IS.
please please please. people who are all for this idea, don't get mad at me and think i just hate. becos it seems that you guys can't think strait. i'm just looking at things for a logically point of view. before something like this takes off it must be accepted by the majority of the world first.0 -
In response to ssoak. not implementing this at player request in no way signifies intolerance on our parts. I have explained some of the reasoning numerous times and have been ignored, other players have also spoken as to why it would be difficult to implement.
We will not, however, let you accuse us of condoning hatred because you disagree with us. We can't let accusations like that be propagated here, because they are way off base.
