So in a round about way, it's still the catshops... more catshops = more players shopping. lol ;)

You'll notice that if you log out in town and log back in, the frist thing you'll see are the catshops. Then the non-shop players graphics will not load till a bit after.

so the lag should be caused by all the players around the shop that's bogging down the game client in loading the different armor/weapon graphics and not the cat shop graphics.

That's a different issue. Because the game allows customized facial features and armor/fashion, your client doesn't automatically know how to render each person. That info has to be received from the server. For the cat shops it's easy - gender, name, and position. So that info gets sent relatively quickly. For people running around nearby, there's a lot more info that needs to be sent - facial and body features, armor, weapon, shards and glowiness, mounts (if in use), movement updates, etc. So those take longer to get sent by the server, resulting in people taking longer to appear when you login. (Their network code doesn't seem to be very good either, but I don't want to get into that.)

The lag (low framerate) in crowded areas is caused by all the polygons your video card has to render. More polygons = more time to render = lower framerate. So having lots of people, shops, mounts, etc. adds to the polygon count slowing things down. To speed things up, you have to either use simpler models with fewer polygons and less detail (partly what ctrl-F9 does), or hide some of the models so they don't have to be rendered (my idea, and what ctrl-F9 does with the distance slider).

see, i thought about the hide cat shops option, it sounds great in theory

but honestly. . the shops themselves are so simple and have such a low polygon count, like stated already that it really does not cause you cpu to lag.

as also stated above, its all the people crowding around the cat shops with their different armors, mounts, weapons, pets. . everything together is causing the lag

which is why if you removed the cats and all trading of sorts out of arch and other areas and moved it to a centralized location. . aka, "trade town" the lag would be severely minimized (that's a good thing)

you can still have people selling stuff in arch either through player to player trades or auction house

That doesn't always work for some people, it may only help get rid of some lag for them.

I like the idea of a "Trade Town", instead of people spamming catshops in Archy.
    b:dirtyb:chuckle

It SHOULD work for everyone. CTRL+f9 puts all game settings to the lowest possible. If your computer is still choking in west arch even after that then it's time to upgrade. How can you consider yourself a gamer with such a **** computer? b:shocked

Fraps says I'm at 24 fps west arch Heavens Tear; thats with max settings 1280 res (crappy monitor b:shocked). I tried on HT because it's 10x more crowded than HL which is my home server. But yeah, 24 fps at max settings. With ctrl+f9 I go up to 50+ fps anywhere I go in west arch. And I can also move the sliders under the UI tab so I can see players. Theres not a noticable drop when I do that.

My computer is not new either. It's an oc'ed E8400 with a 9800GT card and 2gb ram. Two year old computer...

Q6600@3.6ghz, 9800gx2, 8gb ram, one year old. Crysis at 80+ fps max settings.

It doesn't work for those of us who are a bit further from the server. Catshops may be simple, but the people who loiter around west arch because of the catshops need costume features that require server to send relevant information. Your line speed doesn't matter either when the server is the bottleneck.

a 2 yr old computer is relatively new in comparison to most people i know

ya it's old on the technology side of things, but even still ctrl+F9 is not the end all answer for everyone

i know it does not honestly do much for my cpu, i know its older but honestly the only place my computer ever hitches is at west arch and i know I'm the only one who complains about this

it's not a game breaker for me by any means, i love this game and appreciate everything the devs do for us : )

but im just make a suggestion that hopefully someday the developers will think about adding it into the original someday and then it can hopefully make its way over here in time

I like the hiding the cat shop option as well as a trade town. But here are a few additonal ideas I would like throw in the mix.

Leave the option to set up shop where ever you want.. but you only get say 24 hours to leave your shop up out side the trade town. In the trade town maybe you can have it as along as you want.

Or no trade town and just do a shop timer.

Yes! West side is overpopulated, and you see this is due to the fact of the west-side-gate is a primary enter/exit for most quested areas, such as "The mines".

Let us not forget all the major NPC's we have to visit,as well as, they are mainly set up on the west side of Archosaur.

If it were balanced, throughout the city with NPC's that we mainly visit, it will enhance not only the gaming community but would satisfy a more broader, and economical environment.

Im just glad that the auction house isnt catshop based. although the catshops may seem annoying, i doubt its the problem. Maybe if people stopped hangin around. Maybe if everyone with a mount was to dismount in town until they left. Maybe if all the veno's who feel the need to run thru town with a pet would stow the pet unless they were upgrading at the pet manager. Maybe if you could walk thru the west side and not see some barb sitting in the same spot on a giant bird for 8 hours. I understand the catshop, it makes sense with the location everyone chooses to sell what they have to sell. But whats the point of a barb on a bird for 8 hours of inactivity? other than creating a cluttered laggy enviroment. Thats why I log off when Im not playing or selling out of a catshop. Its called common courtesy. But then I also accept that not everyone can be as considerate either.

IF they were to disable kitty shops i'd quit...thre is too much in arch i need on a daily basis and w.q. already requires you to fly around the world enough as it is....... not going out of the way to solve you lag sorry, if you log and relog in it will usually fix your problem

I wouldnt like a trade town, arch is a huge town that lots of poeple go to at all lvs. The thought of having to fly somewhere to go check out some shops ehh.. maybe they could set up an NPC in arch that will tele you to a trading realm or whatever. that way its still in arch.

I dont lag to much in arch tho. Only when i have up other things like ..forums lol.

Theres another game i played for a bit "Shaiya" That has a massive main city right in the centre of he map and I think it mightve lagged there from all the shops. So they created a portal that leads to another city, theres only one way to get there and that is through the portal.
Player shops were banned in all places except through that portal and it works really well.

If people would spread out a bit more, that would be nice.

I prefer to buy from the auction honestly, its faster, easier and sometimes comes up with much cheaper prices.

Again though, if people would just spread out a bit that would be wonderful.

I don't understand why we need a new town. Just ban cat shops all together in every city. Then make the auction house free to use. Done. No need to make another town all together.

    Cat Shop
Pros - No Auction Fee, No Time Limit, Impulse Buy Traffic
Cons - Causes Computer Issues In West Archosaur

    Auction House
Pros - Less Lag, No Need To Be Online 24/7

    3 things you forgot about....
    1. Catshops work for buying things as well as selling.
    2. Catshops allow you to buy part of a stack.
    3. Catshops can be set up where there is no auctioneer nearby.

1 and 2 could be fixed with some coding. 3 would require something like the cash shop, where you can open the auction window anywhere. That takes away a bit from the game, as now there is no thinking involved where to put your cash shop. No chance to take advantage of your position, for example the Bully room in the cube, or right outside the TT instance.

The guy who suggested just being able to turn them off had the ideal solution. Easily coded and it doesnt change any functionality.

You're also forgetting that the Auction House doesn't let you try on fashion. Cat shops do. If you want to get rid of Cat Shops, you'd need to add that feature to AH.

Actually, they need to add that feature to AH anyway, but until then, I'll continue to shop from cat shops exclusively for fashion.

Oh, and also, the TT mats section of the AH is a complete mess. It's honestly easier to find some mats in cat shops than it is to sort through all those auctions.

There's an even simpler solution. They should just add a "hide cat shop" button. If you're just passing through Arch for quests or visit NPCs, you'd turn this on and the client wouldn't download nor render the cat shops. When you do wish to shop, you'd just hit that button and all the cat shops would show up again.

There is. Go to the panel you go to to change the graphical settings and on the first tab there will be a bunch of checked or unchecked boxes. Check the one that says "hide player shops or something like that

That's just a toggle to turn off the name of the cat shop.
