Not really. I agree that vanguard should be leveled first and foremost. It gives you that little edge to compensate for your achiles heel - physical def. However, magic shell is pretty much worthless early game. There simply aren't any magic mobs (except what, those pyro enemies west of archo, which are a joke to begin with). 90% of the mobs all the way up to the 60s are pure melee, rendering magic shell just about worthless. Now I'm not saying to forget about magic shell till you're 60; it should be long maxed by then. But up until the say 40s I would definitely prioritize spirits gift over magic shell. It affects ALL your spells (from heals and metal attacks to plume shot), unlike magic shell which won't really shine until the late 50s when you come into Tusk Town, which is rougly the part of the game where you're actually forced to deal with magic mobs.

Edit: 3 classes use the magic attack buff :p

well, i maxed the pdef buff and mdef buff as fast as possible :P
and those 2 aren't expensive at all actually, compared to some skills... (like the regen buff...sigh..)

pdef got level 10 at 36 and mdef at 43 ^^ (also got the party buffs for them)
and then i managed to keep up with plume as well which is maxed since level 45.
ironheart was left 1 level behind, but thats not much at low level still.

Now that i got those maxed ill start levelling ress and the other 2 buffs, and i dont think that ress have been needed so much yet either. Have it level 3 at the moment. (I'm level 47)

+60% physical and magic defense is your highest priority in buffs. Those are the essentials as every class needs them - only 2 use magic attack buff.

Ok...so switch the subject when proven wrong. Again.

spirit's gift is not an end-your-life priority. it can wait until you're important defense buffs are maxed.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i never "switched" the subject.

You are correct Forp. My apologies. However...

The most important skill a cleric has is HEALING...sorta why they are called "Healers". Strange thing is that Spirit's Gift affects heals as your heal strength is based off your mAtk. It also affects, oddly enough, your attacking strength. You know...dropping that mob before it has a chance to test your pDef or mDef. THEREFORE Spirit's Gift is of more priority than your defensive buffs.

Don't get me wrong...both of the defensive buffs are important but you won't suffer as much letting them fall slightly behind as you would allowing Spirit's Gift to fall behind as it serves a dual purpose where the defensive buffs do not.

doesn't matter anyways. the sp cost of spirit's gift is a lot at lower levels. maxed 20 levels after your vanguard spirit(the biggest priority in buffs, should be maxed as soon as possible) for more than 2x the cost; maxed 13 levels after magic shell(not as high of a priority, seeing as arcanes generally have an ungodly amount of mdef anyways) for 2x the price. you'll always max those 2 first, and level them above spirit's gift. dropping those 2 entirely would leave you enough spirit to level.. your debuffs? idk. useless at lower levels.
