Hello everyone. I recently made a barb and am curious if a good tank build is still viable in 2014.

My plan is to put 3 str, 1 vit, 1 dex every 2 levels and then 3 str, 2 vit every 3rd level until I get around 60 dex. Then I will do 4 str, 1 vit,/ 3 str 2 vit every 2 levels.

Is this a good build for the game nowadays? I want to be strong and be able to tank anything. I do not plan on being a cata barb although I might someday, but my main goal is tanking and just playing the game.

I don't want to go aps as my sin is already, but if that's the only way to go now, I could. thanks in advance.

Its good for the beginning and with all the free and OP gears you get until you're lvl90 it should be extremely easy that way and you should have no problems in tanking.

Just so you know. Being able to tank anything, anytime literally requires you to go max gear or nearly max gear. At least full r9 with a +10 weap minimum. And even then you could lose aggro sometimes. That only counts for the highest and newest instances in the game. Shouldn't have any prob with anything else. Unless you like to be a aps barb like me you won't be able to hold the aggro against apsing chars like other Barbs, BMs and sins at the point they get the most of their aps gears which is between lvl 90 and 100.

Barbs are amazing, especially STR focused barbs can deal DMG like hell. Just be aware that it could get frustrating end-game wise and extremely expensive if you really need to be able to tank anything. If not. Chillax and enjoy your barb (:

I read that thread and was more curious of my planned build and if it is worth the effort to stay on that path vs. APS and just wanted other's opinions on being a pure tank build, being that I was making a thread anyways.

    Tanking includes 2 things:
    • Surviving
    • Holding agro

    Vit helps with surviving
Str helps with holding agro. (also if you are not OP and thus tanking in tiger form)

If you are poorly geared, vit is advisable. Between 15 and 20k HP in tiger is the zone where go go from being almost useless to being able to tank everything. All HPs above 20k are nice for being careless/soloing and better arma damage, but not a necessity to tank anything.

So when your gear is good enough (G16 medium refined) strength starts to become more interesting.

Refining weapons is more efficient than refining armor though. So in the beginning focus on refining your weapon first even if you are statting vit. Its better to have for example a +10 weapon with +5 armors and some vit statted than to be pure strength and have +7 everything.

If you choose to stat vit now because you dont expect to have to have medium refined G16 soon, you can restat your vit to strength later when you rebirth.

Holding agro is a bit outdated for most part of the game. As said, you simply wont hold agro against +10 refined APSers until you have a well refined R9 weapon. Also, those APSers are used to tanking and they dont really need you to do it. If however you do try to hold agro, one of the most important things is to get your morai skill stomp of the king asap. Also lvl 11 ream and devour ofc.
Everything i write is from PvE perspective unless mentioned otherwise.

Looks nice but my full tank would be dex+str only for requirements for wep and armor and everything else vit, working really good for me although if you like pvp you might want to get the 50% acc rings and put a bit more in dex

This I agree with but with a small asterisk. Even though an APSer is holding agro, you should not get complacent; it is still your job to tank and you must keep up your agro as best you can. If you can split the agro between you and the strongest DD and that is your best, then you are proving your worth.

I read a post years ago from someone else stating something I still entirely concur with. Basically, the strength of the DD has gotten so far out of hand that a Barbarian being the dedicated tanker is:

    1) No longer possible. (*As easily as it use to be, +12 800 STR barbs scoff at this)
    2) No longer entirely necessary.

The role of the Barbarian has shifted more closely to being a buffer, a meat shield, a general defense, a person responsible for keeping everyone alive (A stray mob hitting the cleric) and of course a puller.

    ^This. +1

Even if barbs are no longer the main tank in instances, other than instances like fsp which even then u dont need a barb...I will say this even if you as a barb is not tanking if for whatever reason the squad gets wiped due to an aggro issue. Two people wll get blamed, urself and the cleric. So be aware tht this does happen even if you arent the one tanking. Barbs as already has been mentioned are more like the ultimate safety net for squads now a days. Dont let it bum ya out though, barb is still a hell of a lot of fun to play, and easily one of the classes that offers a good diversity in regards to builds. b:victory

    Also +1 for Wanna's post
