Soulbound gems

So, I been away a while and still catching up on some things.
What is the point of restricting account stash access for soulgems (from primal and from Aba/SoT weekly)?
I have not tried this yet, so I am curious -
If I farm Aba/SoT weekly on multiple characters on the same account and they all have non-stashable gems, can I not just stash the gear I want to put them in between characters and have each character apply their gem?
Is there something in place keeping me from doing this? Does using the gem make the equipment non-stashable?
If this is possible, then I dont quite understand the point of having gems non-stashable

    Not all gear is account stashable, notably rank gear. You can do what you're suggesting with other gear though.

    I imbued a full set of tradable AA with the +85 def shards. The only thing it really prevents is farming shards for non-stashable gear on alts.
