Hey there. I'm learning German in college and I'm hoping to really master the language. I had hoped that I could talk to my teacher but she... blows.

So I started listening to songs... Well, songs by ONE band, cause that's the only one I've heard of, thanks to Desdi - Sanctuary when she was making a Harpy introductory video on the venomancer forums.

I'm listening to Faun - Von Den Elben.

Of course, after memorising all the lyrics and knowing what all the words mean, I'm hoping to do more. More songs recommendations, more artiste recommendations, books that I could read online, perhaps German movies with English+German subtitles (if that exists), the whole gamut.

Hope all the awesome German-speaking people (native or not, learning or learned ones) could jump in and help me achieve my goal.

Vielen Dank!
I copied Desdi's font color. It's too pretty. Forgive me Desdi b:thanks

German of all languages why ???? Theres only 80million of them and most speak english.

But ye these guys should be able to teach you some german :)

For movies, you could try to find the rare good WW2 movies where the germans really speak german. I dont know the names of these movies though. You could try the Dutch move "zwartboek". iirc the dutch speak dutch and the germans speak german in this movie. Dutch and german are very similar so make sure not to mix them up ;) It might be interesting for someone interested in languages to hear some dutch when learning german as well.

Nope. Trust me, you don't want to confront the majority of Germans with English xD

And OP, good luck. Not an easy language but I can't think of anything right now. b:surrender

They are my neighbouring country and i have visited about 2 dozen festivals there. I know them :)
Surely they are not like us dutch and the scandinavians where 98% of the population speaks english almost flawless, but most germans below the age of 30 can communicate in english. And the old stubborn germans ? **** them :)

I took German in school and it is actually an easy language to learn. Just keep listening to anything you can get a hold of and make note there are quite a lot of dialects as well. Some are even not intelligible in their purest form from people that learn standard german and you will come across that for sure. Read write study and listen.

German is a beautiful language, I'm always happy when I hear someone wants to learn it! I used to be fluent in it due to intensive teaching for exams and stuff back when I was in school, however now I lost my touch due to not using it for years. :(

Don't know about any online books, but you can go visit your local library to see if you can find books written in German or translated in German, I find that literature does help a lot when learning a language, since, if it is a good book, it is bound to be detailed so plenty of new words to learn!
There are also some programs on TV/some TVs at least, where they broadcast German channels. You can inform yourself to see if you can view any, such as 'ProSieben'.

One other thing that helps a lot is, as someone already suggested, movies. Even if it is just a professional dub done for a well-known movie, it still is something, as it helps you to see how some words are pronounced. And subtitles are good too, of course!
Countries tend to hire actors to dub movies usually for children's animated movies, yes, but also more serious movies if you don't like watching animation much, are bound to be out there.

When it comes to music, I could coin the band Oomph! (particularly their song, Sandmann, personal favorite <3) but their songs are on the rock/metal-ish side, so if you're not really into that genre, it probably won't tempt you to listen.

Best of luck! With such a dedication, anything can be achieved, and I'm sure you will be speaking it so fluently soon that you will give us all lessons. :D

Agreed. I took German for quite a few years, but I couldn't really pursue it after grade school.
