Genies are good for the following
Depending on skill you choose:
Buffing yourself and party members.
Debuffing bosses and mobs for faster kills.
Provide needed HP in cases of emergency.
Hope this helps

For PvE they are a nice bonus. For PvP, i think they are of utter importance. Since we are in the noob corner and i have no pvp experience anyway lets look at pve only.
The zeal genie is the most popular pve genie because of its starting skill earthflame. You can cast this on a mob, and the mob will be agroed and come to you. No other mobs will be activated though, no matter how close they were to the mob you attacked with earthflame. This is used to single out one mob from a group.
The second most popular genie skill is holy path. It makes you run very fast for a short amount of time. It can be a life saver sometimes. It will be such a great benefit in the cube of faith that it could almost be called essential. And besides that when you are in a squad its just nice to keep up with everyone else that are spamming any skill available to them to move as fast as they can.
After that, the most usefull skills are probably the healing skills like tree of protection for high HP chars and second wind for low HP chars. Solid shield is a reasonable defensive skill if your genie has enough str points.
I suggest starting with those, youll learn the rest later.0 -

Holy Path - run fast. So when your pulling mobs don't kill you. So if your a cleric you can get to ppl before they die and blame the cleric. So if you show up late to a BH you can catch up to people. So when you accidentally agro Yan the Traitor you can run away.
Second Wind/Tree of Protection - gives you health so you don't die. Dying is bad. If your HP is high enough TOP can also be cheaper than using pots.
Tangling Mire - use when you are vortexing so you don't have to vortex as long and use up pots. Also good on bosses when somebody sparks
Extreme Poison - on bosses when people are sparking
Cloud Eruption - gives you sparks so your not the guy who couldn't use that vital skill that needs sparks in time and so your squad wiped and now people think your a loser. Also vastly cheaper than chi pots.
Absolute Domain - take no damage for a few seconds. Damage is bad.
For PVP anyone squishy who goes to NW should think about getting Expel to survive sin ganks out of stealth since they target squishy people for that. Even if your stunned your genie still works. If that doesn't seem important you haven't been ganked by a sin yet.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0
