pets to compliment HA Veno

So Im not getting another herc/nix for my HA veno. It will be a tank already so Im thinking a good round up of pets will be a sawfly, marksman and scorpion, all levelled to 100, with a variety of skills as I havent worked out yet.

Probably doesnt matter but meh. Thoughts?

id say go DD. while i have had fun using my walker a DD pet compliments a HA veno more in pvp. id say grind with tank fight with DD. so scorpion and walker.

Scorpion or wanderer (or hatchling, when you hit 101 and if you can find it) with pierce (so you don't have to switch to human for ironwood) and threaten, claw if you can afford it.

I'd say go with a Walker, having a pet that can tank in an emergency on top of being good DD never hurts and the Scorp and Wanderer are both made obsolete by the Derjan's Hatchling if you're going for dps. Save investing on rare skills for this last one. For skilling I would recommend you keep the Walker's Roar, and to add Bash and Threaten (this helps your tanking) on top of pierce, although you may want to keep Icicle if you want a damage skill as a default. Personally I went for near full reskilling on my Shaodu Cub just to have the default right and all other skills where I wanted them but the extra couple of mil is probably not worth it for most venos.

Leaving minmaxing aside, and if you don't care about your pet tanking, the Nine Tailed Fox is actually pretty decent damage (should be the top 6-7) a relatively rare good looking pet and it won't require so much work leveling which will certainly save you some trouble. Skilled with Bash, Pierce, Threaten, Claw it would make for a very unique and effective choice.

Edit; Actually, I think I'd recommend Flesh Ream over Bash on a pet that's meant to assist a Fox tanking. The damage is pretty much the same (ream wins by a negligibe amount) but Bash is generally recommended because it makes for better aggro, which you don't want on your pet.

nix is the only useful pvp pet, and even that is very dated, tho rumor has it herc and nix are getting upgrades soon.

the only other thing that couple possible be a little useful in pvp would be a ranged pet hiding in the bushes, or something flying or fast that has maxed howl.

pets have not kept up with gear, if you want to pvp using pets you are better off with a mystic, at least for the time being

I wouldn't go so far so as to call all other pets useless, while certainly Ream is far from being the PvP factor it used to be it's still a must, and there are some advantages to pet skills other than pounce. I've got a lvl 80 skatefish as my dedicated PvP pet, it can still put some hurt on lower level players and its got maxed slow which comes in handy on NW. As a backup my PvE tabby can howl and threaten oponents when I'm mostly doing suport work. It's certainly not ideal, I'm currently working on a nix, but for me it makes a noticeable difference not to use them. Yes, they'll get 1 shot, I literally buy sesame oil by the hundreds.

I agree with SashaGray in that pets have not kept up with gear and that even the nix is now dated. But veno does remain a viable and competitive class in PvP, and it is my opinion that if you're goint to PvP on a veno any pet is better than no pet at all, if nothing else it will prove a nuissance/distraction to your oponents and you'd be amazed at how many players actually waste their time and chances specifically targeting and killing a pet that is likely no real threat to them at all. Apart from the traditional sawfly and the skatefish I'd recommend an armoured bear or shaodu cub as cheap ways to get pounce for venos looking to PvP on a budget. If it gets you 1-2 kills for an NW session it's certaily worth it.

Yeah I was really thinking the nuisance factor. Someone mentioned in another thread that their pet was hard to target because of its size, and for that reason was better than the big Herc. Obviously this will make no difference in an aoe situation but the zippy little scorpion might annoy people if I put the right debuffs on it. Same for the marksman if theres other chars in the way.

With the snowmen here I just want to take advantage of the situation to level pets - Ive made a 101sawfly, 100 sawfly, 100 skatefish and 100 marksman so far.

Im also thinking of a froggy. Maybe some r9 barb with faulter if they actually fall off their chair at home laughing when they see a froggy tearing out of the bushes at them b:laugh

My experience as heavy veno that in pve dd pets cant help much they steal aggro all the time and then die becouse i either heal them then no dmg from me or i dont heal them then they die and no dmg from pet. I had to be 101 to overcome my dd pets attack so it doesnt steal aggro but only on normal mobs on [?] (lvl150) mobs and bosses it still does. In PVP dd pet is must have must use Mage classes can kill me easily but pet can hurt em good derjans ancient hatchling saved my *** a few times in NW.

Take any good dmg pet and teach it Pierce skill (phy def debuff). It helps a lot.

The thing is, my AA veno is my main and the HA is gunna be just an alt to muck around with. I dont plan on getting to 101 on the HA, I'll stop at 100. Because of the snowmen I levelled pets just for the heck of it really, but I thought I should make something for the HA to use.

So considering I wont be getting a herc or nix and wont be sufficient level for the derjan's hatching, what do you recommend. I was thinking just the scorpion, marksman and sawfly for some dd and debuffs - I probably wont focus on keeping them alive, just send in, debuff opponet, let them die or recall them or something....I dont really know. What would you do in my situation with a level 100 HA veno? Thanks.

Considering what you wrote above I'd choose a tank pet (probably the Glacial Walker) because it's always good to have a back-up tank pet with you regardless of build, then a Scorpion or the Dark Wanderer as an instance and all-around DD/debuff pet.

As a flying pet both the Sawfly and the Manta pet are good choices. The Marksman is a useful pet too and ideal for pulling as well. That's about all the pets you'll need. For water quests and whatnot just tame a pet of your level.

Those would be my choices if I had leveled my HA Venomancer (she never went past lvl70 and I retired her). Free cheap pets that can perform very well. You'll have to invest some coin in leveling their skills but that's about it.

MANray_ - Sanctuary

I agree with Desdi, even if you'll stick to soloing/farming on your AA herc'ed veno a pet tank really is a benchmark standard in terms of capabilities, regardless of build. Yes, the Marksman is ressilient enough it's a near tank in its own right and should suffice for most of your PvE activity, especially given its very unique ranged tanking ability, but it simply is't on par with a Walker and this does come down to survival in some worst case scenarios. A good alternative is the Armoured Bear, it will certainly save you some leveling and skilled with Roar it will make for a fitting back up should you ever need one.

On the air pets I think you may have gone a bit overboard with the leveling, although these pets can prove very valuable to some venos. The problem is that while HA venos are an interesting enough PvE challenge, the point to the build is PvP. And full PvP capabilities do require a Nix. Skilling a Sawfly with Pounce and Claw is no longer a cost effective option and the new upgrades will likely make it less so. Yes, I do realize you mean to keep your investment minimal, but given the relative low cost of a Phoenix when compared to competitive endgame gearing, it almost seems like something of a waste for you not to get one eventually. For skilling, other than the requisite Flesh Ream I would recommend Slow on non legendary PvP pets.

With a level 100 ceiling the Scorp is pretty much the best dps available to you, so this is a no brainer much like the Eldergoth. As you've indicated no reasons to prefer an alternative there really isn't anything that will outperform these cookiecutters. I would recommend Ream over an elemental Bash if you'll be skilling the Scorp as straight dps however, it comes to being the same amount of damage except its phys and produces less aggro. The longer cooldown also makes it easier to use.

pets for PVE kind of don't work with instances glitching them to the point of them not being able to be summoned... AEU / Nirvana / parts of TT.... I'm LA I never pull out pets for PVE they get used during NvN but thats about it.

If you want a cool looking good DD pet get a seamonster guardian i had that before the derjans ancient hatchling and its quite good. Most bosses aoe is magic and the seam. guardian has high magres.

So... you have 10 Veno Pet slots (if you Max your Cage).
I like to keep a Backup for each class of pet but with the new pet evolution system some of the elite pets become multi environment class (Ground, Air and Water) or so it was stated in the PW News notes. This was not mentioned in your discussion which is a BIG PLUS for any pet.

I currently keep; 2 DD/tank ground, 2 Air (1DD + 1 MAG), 2 Water (1 DD + 1 MAG) , 1 Speedy pet (for luring), 1 low level pet for Pet collecting and 1 for experiment or pet leveling.

I currently have: Herc, GW, Infernal Eidolon, SawFly, Celestial Plumpfish, Mermaiden Rustler, Cuddly Pup, Snow Hare, Dodon JailBird and a Mount.

I find it is hard to tank because I hit harder than my pet and even the Herc can not keep argo without having Roar skill. So... it looks like I'll be looking to get a Hatchling to replace the GW, the negative points are, that it is a Lv101 pet that requires Hay for food.
OR just maybe the Evolved Herc will be a better Tank (I'm still working on that).

I wanted to build a HH Veno but this version of the game does not have all the tomes or other items that it is SUPPOSED to have. This was VERY disheartening.

Celestial Giant's exclusive skill has powerful aggro generating ability, and some of the mood skills (especially Howl) generate a lot of aggro. Expect your herc to hold aggro better after evolving, sometimes even stealing from barbs, and to be able to tank some bosses previously out of the question.

Kitty uses Glacial for tanking when squad has much ppl that could steal aggro(especially sins), Scorpion for DD and Tabby Plumdrop(Kittysama's Evil<3) for debuffing so Kitty doesn't need to swap to normal form when she's doing some phys. DDing.
