Hateful Speech in World Chat and Moderator Response

Just wondering why this should even be an issue. The hate in wc is clearly a violation of the ToS which in itself is a joke. Not that I'm actually expecting anything on PWI's side in the form of a ban or anything.
But to all the ppl saying just blacklist or ignore:
1) BL is so tiny
2) If its against the ToS then its understandable for anyone to be upset that the game isn't enforcing its own rules.
That being said, we all knw tickets don't do **** with regard to stuff like this...either mute WC on ur settings or just delete some old ppl on ur BL and add these jerks!

Blacklisting those types of people is what I recommend, and if your list gets full just delete the earliest ones on your list, as they probably haven't brought issues in the WC for a while. And for ones that do continue that, leave them on the list.

A larger blacklist would probably be an easy fix to this problem.

I have no choice but to state what I have always felt about the topic for years.

I guess that the bigger offenders in world chat (those who imply sexual content by 'roleplaying' while this game is not rated +18, nor has adult content -if you dismiss some of the skimpy outfit, but I am sure there is worse elsewhere and is just worth a T rate-, but also those who burp loads of hateful, racist comments or name-calling on a whim, or brag about scamming others, among others).
Truthfully, such displays of behavior in a GAME are plain ridiculous. They'd better play a FPS for sheer competition and spineless trolling but also go into cyber chat via messengers to roleplay as much as they want.

I feel that this bg bunch of idiots were not stopped in time (it was more about a lenient big bro behavior than a legitimate, firm authority relationship). They feel they got some immunity, even more when they are 'deemed so' because 'they spend a lot in this game'.
I do feel at times that world chat is the home of some verbal delinquents... and them being told they have been added on blacklist only makes them prouder. It's like a damn achievement for them.

What is worse, is when they get banned for a week. They tend to celebrate their return by bragging and being worse than before (and incitating others to do like them).

It's natural to get away from the world chat window when it gets too stupid. It's normal to report the fools when it goes sour. That said, I have yet to witness fear in the latters' eyes, so much that they would stop or keep it in whisper...
In fact, they could limit themselves to the latter... But they do want to be heard, they want to show their utter silliness.

There needs to be some change, so world chat gets a tad cleaner. And there would there no need to flee or rely on blacklist all the time. b:surrender

If there was a cool down between teles, it would limit the amount of **** that goes on in WC. Their mistake was making WC so spamable. There is a set channel for merchanting. I don't know how it works, but I have seen it being used. There should be a channel for recruitments. Unfortunately, that goes back to the main developers in China.

I have WC shut off in all channels, save for default. Sometimes I look at it to see the drama of the moment or if someone is selling something I want. I rarely talk in it.

Just to be clear: I don't totally disagree with chat monitors. I just feel like completely limiting WC to trade and recruitments sucks. I'm also not trying to be mean. I just can't think of another word that expresses the emotion ATM, so 'sucks' it is.

As for people mentioning children playing this game... Online games normally have disclaimers stating that the rating while online might differ. Parents who don't watch their children shouldn't be part of a GM's concern. It's like when people leave their cart full of kids outside the store bathroom and expect the employees to watch them. Not every game is intended for children.

Not to say there isn't a little carebear in me when it comes to kids, but in the end, they aren't my kids.

Meh, wc can get pretty annoying at times. Sanctuary got lots of the usual attention seekers, people who will pick childish fights over nothing and even some who will talk the worst, bragging about someones dead parents.

Sure, it's not okay and I wish someone would keep an eye but I wouldn't want to have that job. lol Besides that, some of the worst offenders probably spend that much money on teles that a ban is unlikely.

But you got a blacklist. And it's the internet. Don't expect people to be nice, just don't. People will troll and throw their hate at you. The best you can do it is ignore it and use the methods you got. Blacklist works just fine for me.

About your earlier assumption, apology accepted. Trust me, I'm very very much against hate and bullying others. Because I know how it feels to be on the receiving end. But it's so easy to avoid those douchebags online.

In fact, teles are a nice way to get rid of extra tokens of luck. I've always found it to be a nice sink.

Indeed, it's really easy to spam with them, so much that some people just type '1', '2', '3', etc. to annoy people around.

Recruitment and merchanting via teles is fair since normal talk has a limited range. That said, it gets stale very rapidly, especially when the talker is truly impatient (and overuses silly, unfitting emotes for it).

Some of the world chat is really funny (though it's really the much minor part). I tend to pm people with a witty comment when it's really funny to me (and the absolutely clever funny, not the 'hurr, herp derp' type, the latter which ticks me off).

Drama is tiring and overrated... I pity the fools when they are just acting... Truly sad.

I am in favor of chat monitors. As I richly ranted above, it's gone out of control for years and it seems there is no limit to it. The biggest offenses should be truly punished (a permanent world chat silence sentence, anyone?). Increasing the blacklist size should be helpful to me, as I would expel the more 'spammy' types, but...

...Yes, I feel that the worse people should be deal with swiftly, especially if they do it all the time (and I do know people who do that).

90% off Sanc's "wc drama fights" are purely orchestrated shows by 2 or more ppl that know eachother and are just looking to get reactions. Knowing the "insults" are just to make them laugh in skype/squadchat makes it even more pathetic then it already is.

With this I'm split. I can understand people wanting to be able to speak freely, but at the same time why should my game quality be lowered because of it. Several times I have tried to WC for a squad and was barely able to because of the massive about of spam and trolling going on in WC. My option was either to use 5 times as many teles or give up and not do it. I was trying to use WC so I could actually play the game. When it gets to the point that a person is unable to play because of how bad WC is, then that is a serious problem.

I think the best way to keep everyone happy with this, is to add a second set of teles. They already have a market chat, but similar to normal chat it has a limited range. Make a second set of teles that allows things in market to be seen like WC. But market is limited to only buying/selling or forming of squads. That way people who don't want to see the drama can still get squads or find items and the trolls can still get their fix in regular WC.

I like the idea of a secondary WC. I think other games do have something similar, specifically for forming squads.

As for the rest, well. I can't say one side of the argument is right and the other is wrong. I think both have some truth into them but in the end; probably the best option is unlimited blacklist or sending a ticket/report.

As far as I am concerned, I just ignore what I don't want to see. There's also a lot of times I have wc off.

It's not about parents watching their kids, or ratings while online (there is no offline version of this for people to play).

It's about remembering there are REAL LIVE HUMAN BEINGS on the other side of our shiny shiny toons.

It's about having enough courtesy for those real live human beings to keep your hate and foul language to private chat so the rest of us don't have to deal with it.

Easy to sort it out :

1 - Screen players below you level. ( That means you can not see their chats ) This way you kinda filter a LOT of players.
2 - BLacklist - Yes the list is only SO big, but it still helps for those BAD words...
3 - Decide WHO to blacklist. Would you blacklist a person for using certain words ONCE or rather the blacklist the constant irritating player? ( Narrow it down )
4 - Live with it.


GM's and mods can not ban players for what they do not see. Contrary to popular myths they actually do need some sleep as well.

I saw some-one said they are volenteers - FYI : Volenteer means YOU DONT GET PAID !


And lasty number 5:

Live with it.
For evry 1 you get banned 1 extra will pop up.

Most people "wilt" away of little or no attention is given. The more attention you give them the more they get to you. ( That is part of life lessons 101 )

You're basically saying we should punish all the lowbies who can't even afford the teles to world chat. If this is how people are on Lost City, then it explains the lack of community, and the inability to get things done in a timely manner. How are lowbies supposed to get culti and bh's if everyone filters them out?

This would certainly explain why our Sweet Remembrance event was so massively fail for so long.

LOL IKR that's the most absurd solution to the problem offered. Seriously though just use the method I listed on the front page. You don't have to see it.

And I'm pretty neutral on this whole topic because both sides have a lot of truth to the matter. And what is offensive to one person, isn't offensive to another person. I've said random things in world chat, like the chorus to a song. It's fun sometimes, like going to a karaoke bar and getting a bunch of random strangers to rock out with you. Hell, I've made friends that way. Ones that were not in the my faction, squad, or friends list and thus could not have been communicated with by any other means. Then again, in general, I don't spam it so much that people can't make squads. I wouldn't put the whole song, maybe just a couple of lines.

Should i be banned for spamming? Probably technically. And perhaps there are some people who are offended by Journey's song and have blacklisted me. Was it hurting anyone? Was it constant? Did it prevent anyone from finding a squad? No. But if the GMs instantly banned someone for doing something once just because a ticket was sent on the issue. A lot of people wouldn't be a part of this game anymore.


That's why they kinda just wait for several tickets to be sent and only ban the worst offenders after it's been going on for ages. But that doesn't really solve the bans because often they come back and brag about the ban. And when one is gone the other takes it's place. And it is annoying. It's frustrating when someone is doing something like counting to 100 just so other people can't find squads. Or brings up tons of sexual content. And it absolutely impedes gameplay. And there are some things that do perhaps cross pretty much everyone's lines and shouldn't be allowed.


It's not a simple issue and I'm glad I don't have to moderate it. That said if you absolutely are in a constant state of offended by world chat, you can and should turn it off. Not everything in life is going to be fair or handled the way you want it to be. Sometimes you just gotta learn to deal with it.

It's not as simple as it sounds for sure. Personally I would have the worst offenders get their world chat privileges permanently disabled.

If bans aren't enough to deter them, then just take away the one thing they are abusing. Not like they are using it to do anything productive.
