What is this about? Is this a TT team running a TT that is lower-level than most of the members, so they need a (sacrificial) lower-level person to come and open the instance?

What happens to the opener? Are they discarded like a used tissue, or do they run through with the squad and pick stuff up?

Nothing happends to the opener, they help open.
You need 4 people to open TT, so if a higher lvl runs the instance they need help opening.

Usually the runner pays everyone 50k as a quick thanks, or friends help or stuf

They come to open, not to run. what do you expect to happen?

You need 4 people to open a team mode TT - thats why people send such messages on world chat (often offering 50k for this).
All the opener must do is to come to the TT and wait till the leader talks to all steles. Then he gets paid and can leave/is kicked from the team. He can go back to the city with his easly earned 50k in inventory now xD. And the team leader has the team mode TT all for himself. Both sides win! b:victory
