Curious!!

I have read the section about attack and defense levels,and to be honest i don't understand all that mathematical term... All i gather is that attack level does 1% more damage same a defense level you take less... my question is this... Does this mean it really does not matter if one have high pdef or mdef..

example if i have around 19k mdef against a 90 attck lvl r9 caster means nothing if i don't have any defense levels?at

an what if i have 8k mdef but have around 70 def lvl which would take more damage? seeing that atack an defense level cancels out each other
