I suggest reading the stickied guides.

However, Im unsure of your question. Are you looking for PVP or PVE advice or both?

It comes down to two things: What do you have currently, and what can you afford?

R9 or really, any zerk axes are preferred for PVP. The concept is to do enough, quick spike damage to take down your opponent(s). Axes also have the stun capability.

People do PVP with Fists. The concept is to stun with axes, spark, and beat on the person while stunned, and restun with Roar/Aeolian/Occult Ice. I've seen it done, done it myself, but it is not the best way.

TheDan's guide is invaluable for detailed information on this.

PVE wise you do want the 5aps while sparked setup. You will need axes, as there are many situations where AOE is needed - but R9 would not be a requirement. R9 helps, and is godly, but you can get by just fine with TT90 gold/Lunar Axes/TT99-100 Axes/Nirvana Axes.

Saku's guide goes into extreme detail with a lot of this. The FAQ also shows typical setups.

If this all makes sense and you've read the guides - let us know what you currently have, what you can afford, and what kind of dream build you want. We can best help you from there.

R9 is more valuable for PvP because of the attack and defense levels, as well as higher defenses and refine rates.

5 aps builds, like you've shown, are more valuable for pve than an R9 build because R9 has huge defenses but less damage while using axes. Many people will add 1 -3 pieces of R9 into a 5 aps build, though.

Simply put, for PvE r9 doesn't matter and damage output is more important. You can increase your damage output in your build with r9 ring, sky cover ring, better claws (Deicides at +11 refines, Regicides at +7, G15 vana) and G16 cube neck and jungle neck. You can increase your defenses by an event cube neck, rather than the crafted one, or a piece R9 gear.

Personally, this is what I am considering for endgame.

Those are actually G16 3rd recast claws, but I only have one add-on included. Not including R8recast plate add-ons, or ring engravings also, so I should be over 400 strength by the time I'm done. For me, the lower hp but higher defense levels makes bloodpaint more valuable because I lose less hp when attacked so it's easier to replace with paint heals, and the defense levels work towards both physical and magic attacks.

It's not the best for PvP, but survivable. I'm working towards a G15 Morai axe for PvE and someday will aim for R9 axes for PvP. This build is 5.0 but highly defensive. If you feel R8r plate for -int is out of the question you can use R9 plate and Regicide claws, or TT99 LA wrist and boots and TT99 belt and plate with -.05 claws.
