After talking to Decus of Dreamweaver, I thought it would be fun starting a thread helping people with their school work! Now, I know Decus started that Math thread, and most people, even those outside DW use that thread for Math solutions, so I thought, why not, do a Chemistry help thread!

Sooooo hit me with organic, physical, analytical chemistry questions now! Or whatever Science questions you may have. If there aren't any, I'll pose a Chemistry question challenge!

    I majored in English for college until I dropped out. Lol.
    I cant understand numbers for SHT. I just type how I talk, I'm actually pretty decent in English and such. I used to troll my english teachers.
    Confusing words like break and brake; weak and weekl they're their and there; your and you're...
    It annoys me. So I usually ignore it now.

    Its a really nice thing you want to do for helping people that hate numbers get through!

    Major in English, I know lots of people who majored in English. I make sure to yell at them if they make my big mac wrong.

    I used to be biochem major, but I hated organic chem so damn much. I had a fine time in everything else: GenChem, Physics, Math, everything. Except O-chem. HAAAAAAAAATE O-chem.

    I'll try to fit in here and say that I'm on route to a Protection Security and Investigations degree.

    Oh no, I'm weird too. I actually love o-chem out of all the other branches of chemistry - physical, analytical, inorganic, experimental. Oh I love experimental too, though everyone in my cohort hates it.

    I got a bachelors in biology, a minor in math, a minor in business administration and a masters in computer science. I use chemistry everyday as a street pharmacist.

    Closest thing I've seen is 1-2-Dibromo-5-Methylhexane. Can't seem to find anything like 1-1-Dibromo-5-Methylhexane, but it doesn't meen it doesn't exist.

    Gonna try doing this without a screenshot.

    So you have a hexane parent chain, a methyl group on the 5th carbon and 2 bromines on the first carbon.

    I want to make a Grignard reagent that contains a carbonyl function group. Is it possible? Is yes, how do I go about creating the Grignard reagent?

    ummm, don't think so...since the reagent itself is meant to react with carbonyl groups and similar electrophilles, even if you'd make a side chain with the carbonyl group the reagent would pretty much "eat" itself and result innactive...I thinkb:surrender

    It is possible.

    If you want a Grignard with a carbonyl group, change it into a dioxolane.

    React the carbonyl compound with a diol to form the dioxolane before introducing Mg, or Li or copper, or cerium chloride.

    To remove the dioxolane, simply reflux with acid.

    Next question.... :D
