I was hoping to make a new char and get them up to 99+ without buying ANY items from the store. Can I do that and will it affect me that much? Also will I be good endgame with great armor, weapons, skills, etc?

No, you don't need to buy anything ever. Just learn to merchant.

I'm afraid to say, judging by your statement, this game probably isn't for you.

Leveling is easy. However, you will need to spend many hundreds, if not thousands of hours farming/merchanting to get decent gear at end-game unless you're willing to spend thousands of dollars.

If you can't afford to play 3-10 hours a day every day or can't drop about 5-10 grand, you'll never really matter at end-game.

Or you can merchant and just leave your computer running while your afk. I think Warren has a ton of money on Lost City even he doesn't play that server and mentioned he only spends a very small amount of time on it a week to keep it stocked.....can't remember where he said that but I remember it was one of the reasons I liked his guide so much.....

Of course you gotta buy your stuff.

Now, if you wanna farm your gear and buy from players, its up to ya.

If you're a good merchant, you can do all your gear and FREAKING awesome gear without spending a RL cent.

But in any case: You will have to buy your items, you expect to get it for free or what? b:puzzled

I assume whenever people start threads like this is because they intend to actually play the game and probably don't even realize they'll need to have a catshop or two logged in 24/7 just to make ends meet. If you don't even consider that a major concern to a new player, you have way too much free time on your hands. b:bye

I'm not the one suggesting a new player spend 3-10 hours A DAY, or 5-10 GRAND, on a video game they aren't even sure they'll like. I'm suggesting just leaving their comp on while they hang out with friends/go to school/go to work/ Sleep whatever so that if they like the game and decide to stick with hit, they'll have enough money they won't have to do that. Obvious troll is obvious.

Fair enough, but he wanted to know if he could have 'great gear at endgame' and not have to buy anything.

What point is there for him to try it and see if he likes it if he's not willing to go through a lot of time and effort or money for that great gear?

Do you realize that by leaving your computer logged in 24/7 you just spent about $40-100 a month depending on your computer? Or maybe you dont pay your power bill?

I do pay my power bill, and have never seen a 100 dollar increase because I left my comp on. I don't know, maybe all of my computers past and present are just garbage. But that's a pretty steep increase. No idea how you're pulling that off. Wait, Warren worked this out once, let me see if I can find it because I myself can't put it as well as he did.

I've actually calculated this out, because it's a favourite excuse people use when they're trying to explain why merchanting isn't an option.

My merchanting laptop uses 35 Watts, which works out to 25.2 KW/h, which costs me $2 per month. That $2 seems to be averaging about 500m profit, so basically I'm paying $1 for 250 million coins, which is a lot cheaper than the current Auction House price of $190.

However, the laptop eventually produces heat with all of this energy, so from September to April it's energy I would have needed to pay for heat with anyway. So merchanting is free if it's cold outside and your house is heated with electricity. Or, even better, if your house is heated with natural gas, and electric heat is cheaper than gas (which it is right now where I live), then merchanting actually saves you money.

Of course, math rarely seems to convince anybody that they're wrong, except for merchants and archers. *shrugs*

There you go. Though for what it's worht I haven't had a comp capable of being left on for that long in a while, and I still manage through the AH. Not making as much as I used to, but enough to satisfy my fashion addiction and keep all my chars properly geared. Though I definitely won't have spectacular end game gear. And using the AH doesn't even require leaving the comp on.

Fair enough, but he wanted to know if he could have 'great gear at endgame' and not have to buy anything.

Eh, I see merchanting and paying money as one in the same really. Neither of those things is playing the game for that great piece of gear. I agree with you that the best way to see if you really like the game is to work for the gear by actually playing it. But merchanting is something someone who only wants to spare an hour a week can do, and is something that is profitable regardless of the OP's class/work schedule/choice of ingame class, etc.

I guess I'm pretty lucky in that utilities are included with my rent (i.e. I can run as many or few computers as I like and it doesn't cost me any extra). But honestly, most people I know leave their computers on 24/7, and have done so for the last 10 years (all starting with AIM in college years, of course). b:chuckle
