can't install nor patch game

I had stopped playing PW several months back so I had uninstalled and deleted all PW files from my laptop. When PW introduced Descent I downloaded the game several times and attempted to install it. I kept getting the message broken file while the program was trying to verify data1.pck. I turned off firewall this didn't help. I submitted a ticket on this issue, the response I received from tech support gave me two links for patches, so I downloaded the two patch files. We I attempted to run the patch file, my computer wouldn't open it, so I used windows to try to find a program to open the .cup files the web service couldn't find any program to open these two patch files.
Can someone give me any idea how to install and patch this game please - Thanks
