After updating to Descent I tried to launch and received an error stating d3dx9_42.dll was missing from my computer and that I needed to re-download the game.

    Read stickies.
    2) The game engine has been updated to utilize DirectX 9.0c. If you encounter an error that states "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_42 was not found" you will need to update your DirectX End-User Runtime. It is located at:

what about for me, i got dx11. it is still a runtime issue with dx9 or what. not sure if that'll replace my dx11 with dx9. *no admin privilages on this comp anyway*

:( after about 20 hours of re-installing over and over and downloading the manual patches I am beginning to get rather cheesed off.

If you follow the link provided it will install the latest version of DirectX that your system is compatible with and will make sure that you have all the necessary packages. I had this issue with my Win8 system, and I know it has DX11, but the DX9 packages were never installed.
